Hezbollah deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem said Sunday that the recent Syrian presidential election paved way for the postwar phase as he reiterated the call to elect a Lebanese president as soon as possible.

“The Syrian presidential election lays the foundation for the postwar phase, and we are now in a new stage in the challenge against the plot to bring down the resistance in Syria,” he said.

“What happened [in the presidential election] is a triumph to the axis of the resistance and to Syria,” he said, in reference President Bashar Assad's victory in last week's election.

He said that the United States was now confused after it lost its bet in Syria.

“They now do not know what to do, the United States now does not know what to do and what it wants,” he said.

“That is why it is now waiting for the developments to see how it can ease its losses."

On the domestic level, Qassem called on officials to prioritize three issues: the presidential election, the controversial wage hike and a new electoral law.

“We want a new president as soon as possible, and let us be clear, all indicators show that no president can be elected without consensus,” he said. “Let us reach a consensus to hold the presidential election on time, if you delay the consensus this means the void in the presidency will persist for long and you are to blame for that.”

The Hezbollah official also called for ending the controversy over the wage scale during Parliament’s June 10 session.

He also said that a new law for the parliamentary elections should be endorsed “based on proportional representation” before the term of Parliament ends in November.
