KABUL: The US- based Democracy International (DI) commended Afghanistan’s presidential candidates for their agreement on audit of the ballots cast in the election, pledging to observe every step of the audit process until the completion of the process and final announcement of result.

In a statement on Monday, the DI said that the corresponding audit process, could serve to restore the confidence of Afghans in the electoral process, the electoral management bodies, and the eventual transfer of power to the next president.
“The announcement of this comprehensive audit process will require the continued patience of the people of Afghanistan. The outcome provides promise of a successful election and real legitimacy of the eventual result,” said DI Principal Glenn Cowan.
DI notes the complexity and challenges associated with the task of conducting a complete audit of more than eight million ballots. This process will be difficult and will take time. Therefore, “we urge all Afghans to remain patient throughout this unprecedented process.”
The statement quoted Cowan as saying: “DI will observe every step of the audit process to which access is permitted, until the completion of the process and the eventual announcement of the final result.” (PAN)
