ABU DHABI // Those eligible to vote or stand for the FNC polls will be able to nominate someone to register for them, the National Election Commission announced on Wednesday.

Tariq Lootah, chairman of the Election Management Committee, said registration by proxy would make it easier for voters and candidates to take part.

Many Emiratis said their busy lives made it difficult for them to sign up for the elections.

“We have many responsibilities and many people already have delegates to finish their errands and odd jobs, so it would be easier for them to allow the same delegate to just do the registration for them,” said Moza Al Suwaidi, 31.

Businessman S A, 39, said he was always out of the country and feared he would be unable to be here when registration opened on August 16.

“Giving someone else the representation will surely spare me the hassle of having to maybe fly back and go through the process, but I can still take part in the experience,” he said.

Others rejected the idea.

“Why would I delegate someone else to register on my behalf?” asked Alyazia Al Mansouri, 26. “If I’m not interested in the FNC then I shouldn’t run to begin with.

“I wouldn’t delegate someone on my behalf, I would just register by myself as that is my civil right, because through that I will be contributing and participating with my opinions and thoughts that will benefit the country by myself.

“I will feel more of a loyal Emirati citizen when I go through the necessary procedures on my own.”

Mariam Al Ameri, 24, said: “I wouldn’t send a representative on my behalf because even if someone was able to represent my candidacy, he or she would not be able to convey my message or reason behind it.

“I need to be the one voicing my opinion and be present to answer any questions or uncertainties.”

Applicants wanting to authorise a proxy for registration must issue power of attorney authenticated by a notary.

Mr Lootah, also undersecretary of the Ministry of State for FNC Affairs, said the move was one of many by the NEC to encourage eligible citizens to vote and stand.

The commission has also established a nationwide training programme for Emiratis who want to volunteer during the election process.

Election day is October 3 and polling stations will be open across the country.
