Mada Masr: Egypt independent news outlet's office 'raided'

The office of Egypt's last major independent media outlet has been raided by plainclothes security officers, its editors say.

On Facebook, Mada Masr said laptops and phones were confiscated and three staff members briefly arrested.

Despite being blocked in Egypt since 2017, the website is accessible in the country via virtual private networks.

The authorities have not commented. There has been a crackdown on dissent and free speech under President Sisi.

L’ex-président égyptien Mohamed Morsi est mort après une audition au tribunal au Caire à la suite d’un malaise, a annoncé ce lundi la télévision d’Etat égyptienne. L’ex-dirigeant avait été élu en 2012 après la révolte qui avait provoqué le départ d’Hosni Moubarak dans le cadre du printemps arabe. Il avait ensuite été renversé en 2013 par Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, l’actuel président.

Turkey's president on Friday urged Istanbulites to flock to the polls for the do-over of the mayoral election next month, warning against plots targeting the nation.

Speaking at a fast-breaking (iftar) dinner in Istanbul's Üsküdar district, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan underlined the importance of casting votes for the do-over polls for Istanbul mayor set for June 23.

"Did you see how the West and various countries of Europe rejoiced over the person who they thought won the March 31 elections?" Erdoğan asked.

La révision constitutionnelle controversée permettant la prolongation de la présidence d'Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, qui renforce ses pouvoirs et ceux de l'armée égyptienne, a été approuvée par référendum à 88,83%.

La nouvelle constitution du président Abdel Fattah al-Sissi a été acceptée par 88,83% des votants, a annoncé mardi l’Autorité nationale des élections. 11,17% des électeurs « se sont prononcés contre » cette révision et « le taux de participation (…) a atteint 44,33% », selon le président de l’institution, Lachine Ibrahim.

Egyptians on Sunday participated in the second day of polling for a snap referendum on the "Pharaoh motion", a constitutional amendment which could see President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power until 2030. 

Many say the vote has so far been characterised by bribery and coercion in an attempt to swell the turnout in Sisi's favour.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt’s parliament will vote on Tuesday on constitutional amendments including an extension to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s current four-year-term, its speaker, Ali Abdelaal, said on Sunday.

Proposed constitutional amendments had previously suggested that Sisi would be allowed to seek two new six-year terms after his current one expires in 2022.

But according to a recent draft seen by Reuters, those latest amendments could allow Sisi to stay in power until 2030 by extending his current term by two more years and allowing him to run once again in 2024.

The 32 ministers in the cabinet of Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly were sworn in before President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Thursday.

Last week, President El-Sisi appointed Housing Minister Madbouly as a new prime minister and tasked him with forming the new cabinet, following the resignation of the cabinet of former PM Sherif Ismail.

The new cabinet includes 12 new ministers.

Egypt's Parliament approves in principal two new laws to regulate press and media

After approving a draft law on press and media regulation in principle on Sunday, Egypt’s parliament endorsed two complementary laws aiming to establish the activity of the National Press Authority and the National Media Authority.

 

Parliamentary Speaker Ali Abdel-Aal said "as the two laws are subject to revision by the State Council in legal and constitutional terms, a final vote will be postponed to a later date."

Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has started consultations to form a new cabinet and is expected to be sworn in next week, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Cabinet sources said that Madbouly is expected to finish forming the new government next week and will be sworn in before Eid El-Fetr, which is expected on Friday 15 June. The sources said that the new cabinet will include between 17 to 20 new ministers, mostly from service ministries.

Egypt’s Parliament is conducting final preparations for the inauguration of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as president of Egypt for a second term, after he won the election held on March by 97%.

Sisi will officially begin his second term as president next Saturday according to Al-Ahram newspaper, following a constitutional oath before the special session of the parliament, which will attended by members of the House of Representatives as well as a number of guests and the media.
