Pro-Sisi coalitions to dominate Egypt's parliamentary elections

Egypt’s High Election Committee (HEC), the judicial body in charge of supervising the upcoming parliamentary elections, announced on Saturday that seven electoral coalitions will contest the first stage of the polls, scheduled between 17 and 28 October.

 

HEC's spokesperson Omar Marawan told a press conference on 3 October that competition for 60 party-based seats in the first stage will be held in two constituencies: the West Nile Delta and Upper Egypt North, Middle and South.

81 domestic, 6 international NGOs to observe Egypt’s upcoming parliamentary polls

The Egyptian prime minister’s advisor Refaat Qomsan announced on Wednesday that 81 domestic and six international NGOs will be allowed to observe the upcoming parliamentary elections being held between 17 October and 2 December over two stages.

Ten of Egypt’s ministers will be participating in the preparation and elections processes, among other tasks, Refaat said according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

Egypt's human rights council temporary freezes activity of members running for parliament

Egypt's National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) said on Tuesday that it will temporary freeze the activity of two of its members who are running in the upcoming parliamentary elections, a council statement read.

 

The council will freeze the activities of rights lawyer Hafez Abu-Seida and journalist Mohamed Abdel-Aziz until the end of the parliamentary elections as the council is one of the entities monitoring the polls and it wants to adhere to "objectivity and independence" during monitoring.

Seven electoral alliances are running in the first stage of the parliamentary elections slated for 18-19 October, the High Elections Committee (HEC) announced in a statement on Saturday.

 

There are four lists contesting 15 seats in the West Delta, which are the Salafist Nour Party, Fi Hob Misr list (for the Love of Egypt), Forsan Misr (The Knights of Egypt) and the combined electoral list of the Egyptian Front and the Independence Current.

In a statement on Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections on 16 September, the Higher Elections Committee (HEC) in charge of supervising the polls announced that a total of 5,955 individuals had applied to run in the polls. One day later, however, the committee said the applications of as many as 535 individuals had been rejected, thus lowering the number of independent candidates to 5,420.

The High Elections Committee announced on Tuesday that 2573 independent candidates and four party-based lists will be running for the first stage of the Egyptian parliamentary elections that start on 17 October.

 

The 2573 candidates will contest 226 seats in the ‎first stage, and the four lists will be competing for over 60 seats ‎bringing the total to 286 seats available during the first phase of the elections.

Egypt's Higher Elections Committee (HEC) announced Wednesday an initial list of candidates ‎accepted to contest the country's upcoming ‎parliamentary elections, scheduled for October and ‎November.‎

 

HEC spokesperson Omar Marawan disclosed Tuesday ‎night that a total number of 5,‎420‎ had applied, ‎all seeking to run as independents. In addition, nine‎ electoral coalitions fielded ‎candidates to run on party lists.‎

Egypt's High Election Committee (HEC) announced on Wednesday the acceptance of 5420 individual candidates and nine winner-takes-all party/coalition lists for the upcoming parliamentary elections due to take place in October and November, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

 

There will be 596 seats in parliament, with 448 of them (75%) elected through the individual candidacy system, 120 (20%) through winner-takes-all party/coalition lists, and 28 (5%) selected by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Salafist Nour Party to run for two party-based electoral districts in upcoming elections

The ultra-conservative Salafist Nour Party announced on Friday it is going to run only for two party-based electoral lists in the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to an official statement by the party.

Younis Makhyoun, head of the party, said that the party has decided to run for the Cairo and East and South Delta district, and West Delta district.

The party will be running for 45 seats in the Cairo and East and South Delta (six governorates) district. It will run for 15 seats in the West Delta (three governorates) district.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi accepted on Saturday the resignation of the cabinet of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, MENA state news agency reported.

 

The cabinet had met earlier on Saturday and decided to submit their resignation to the president, according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

The president reportedly ordered the cabinet to continue carrying out their current responsibilities until a new cabinet is formed, and asked Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail to become prime minister and form a new cabinet.

Egypt's High Elections Committee (HEC) accepted on Thursday the application of steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz to stand as a nominated candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections despite a court order that was due to disqualify him from the race. 

 

The application was presented by Ezz’s solicitor Mohamed Hamouda to the HEC in Shebin El-Kom in the Nile Delta governorate of Menoufiya

Egypt Elections Committee will redraw constituency boundaries in Cairo and Qena

The High Elections Committee (HEC) announced on Wednesday that it will redraw the boundaries of two electoral constituencies, one in Cairo and one in the Upper Egypt governorate of Qena, in accordance with an Administrative Court ruling issued on Monday.

 

On Monday, the Administrative Court ruled that the cabinet must redraw two constituency boundaries due to administrative errors committed.

Egypt's Supreme Administrative Court upheld a decision on Tuesday to disqualify steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz from running in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

 

This is a final decision which Ezz cannot appeal.

Ezz, a former senior member of the National Democratic Party (NDP), was disqualified in February from running in the elections by the High Elections Committee (HEC in Menoufiya. He appealed the decision but it was upheld by a Cairo court.

Egypt's centre-left Constitution Party is set to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections, member of the high board Khaled Dawoud told Ahram Online.

 

Dawoud said that the party’s secretary general Tamer Gomaa held a vote among the party members in which the majority voted ‘yes’ to participation in the upcoming elections.

Prominent politician Mohamed Abul-Ghar has resigned as head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party citing a schism within the group, ahead of the long-awaited parliamentary elections the party will contest.

Abul-Gahr, 75, said his exit was prompted by destructive splits, "polarisation" and failed attempts to "heal the rift" within the party.

"It strikes me that my desire for the party to have a clear social democratic ideology, to be popular and to self-finance is impossible with these disagreements raging," Abul-Ghar said in his resignation letter.

Egyptian court sentences 25 Morsi supporters to life in prison

A Sohag criminal court convicted and sentenced on Thursday 25 Morsi supporters to life in prison on multiple counts of murder and the arson of a church in 2013 following the violent dispersal of the pro-Morsi sit-ins in Nahda and Rabaa squares by security forces.

 

The court also sentenced 67 defendants in the same case to 15 years in prison while 27 others received ten-year sentences, all of which can be appealed.

The defendants were found guilty on a number of charges, including the torching of Mar Gerges Church in Upper Egypt’s Sohag governorate.

Egypt’s cassation court rejected on Wednesday an appeal submitted by top Muslim Brotherhood members, including the group's supreme guide, to be removed from the countries "terrorism list" on Wednesday.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, along with 17 other high profile members from the organisation, including Khairat El-Shater, Mohamed El-Beltagy and Essam El-Erian, were all placed on the "terrorism list" earlier in 2015 by the late Prosecutor-General Hesham Barakat.

Over 2700 parliamentary hopefuls submit papers on first day of registration: HEC

An estimated 2745 hopefuls aiming to run in Egypt's parliamentary elections have submitted their papers on Tuesday, the first day of registration, Egypt's Higher Elections Committee (HEC) announced on Wednesday.

 

Candidates wishing to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections, whose first stage is set to begin 17 October, can register between 1 and 12 of September.

No new medical tests for parliament candidates registered in March: Egypt’s HEC

Egypt’s parliamentary elections hopefuls, who previously passed medical check-ups in February before the postponement of the elections, do not need to take new tests to qualify for the polls that start mid-October, the High Elections Committee (HEC) said on Tuesday.

 

In a statement, the committee said its decision would make the election process easier for candidates.

Passing medical tests is mandatory for candidates to register for running in the parliamentary elections. The tests cost EGP 2850 ($365).
