KABUL (PAN): One of the new Independent Election Commission (IEC) members is a doctor of philosophy, six have master’s degrees and another is a graduate.
Last week, President Hamid Karzai appointed Abdul Rahman Hotaki, Gulalai Achakzai, Sharifa Zurmati, Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani, Sareer Ahmad Barmak, Laila Ihrari, Qazi Suleman Hamid, Mohammad Aziz Bakhtiari and Mohammad Hussain Garziwani as IEC members.
KABUL (PAN): The Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) chief on Thursday asked the government to give political parties and civil society groups greater representation in monitoring next year’s election in order to have a credible vote.
In light of the recent appointments made to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), criticism has already started pouring in. This time it has come from one of the members of the Selection Committee, Gul Rahman Qazi. Mr. Qazi on Tuesday said that by considering ethnicity while selecting the Commissioners of the IEC, President Karzai did not give due importance to the competency of each candidate.

): Independent Election Commission (KABUL (PAN): The Wolesi Jirga -- lower house of parliament -- sacked Interior Minister Lt. Gen. Mujtaba Patang on Monday when he failed to survive a no-confidence vote.
While bringing the motion, lawmakers accused the minister of committing massive corruption and showing incompetence in dealing with security threats.
The house began voting on whether or not to bring a no-confidence motion against Patang after declaring his explanations as unacceptable.
KABUL (PAN): As some Wolesi Jirga members objected the way the population census law was passed earlier this week, the lower house on Wednesday appointed a delegation to investigate the issue.
In reaction to the recent comments made by officials from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) about conducting the upcoming Presidential elections according to the Presidential Legislative Decree in result of Parliament's delay in passing the election laws, several political parties on Sunday came out saying that transparency in the elections will be compromised if the Decree relied on as it was in the last elections.

The Meshrano Jirga on Monday approved the new election law, amid calls from the poll panel, political parties and civil society groups for early adoption of the amended draft.
The upper house decided the parliament would endorse any delay in the elections, scheduled for May 2014, in case of case of an unfavourable security environment or natural calamity.

Kabul (BNA) The session of the Upper House Chaired by Fazel Hadi Muslimyar, the Senators approved the amendments to the law on elections up to the article 19.
Based on information of the press office of Upper House, the law has been prepared on the basis of provision of Constitution for conducting presidential elections, parliamentary elections, provincial council’s elections, district council elections, and municipality’s elections.
The Meshrano Jirga on Tuesday approved 19 articles of the amended election law, hinting at a special session on Wednesday to pass the remaining portions.
The Meshrano Jirga on Sunday approved a draft law on the structure, duties and powers of election panels, with some members saying the legislative measure should have been adopted by a two-thirds majority.
The Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament on Wednesday said it would not recognise the Taliban office in Qatar carrying the name of the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,” the former official name of the movement's government.
