The political climate in the country has taken on a sense of urgency in the past week as politicians, parties and coalitions put their heads together to decide on presidential candidates for next year’s presidential elections.
Finally Kandahar Residents Cast Their Votes
After waiting a week to cast their votes, Kandahar residents have finally been able to post their ballots in this parliamentary election.
Kandahar residents will choose 11 candidates out of 111 parliamentary candidates Saturday, a week after the rest of the country voted.
Having had a week to sort out problems that plagued polling centers and stations around the country last Saturday, it was hoped that by now these issues would have been ironed out.
Afghans To Vote In Parliamentary Elections
Afghans are due to cast their ballots in the long-awaited parliamentary elections today (Saturday) amid heavy security measures across the country.
Nearly nine million people registered to vote in the elections.
Polling centers in 32 provinces will open at 7am this morning.
The Independent Election Commission says the polling centers will remain open until 4pm today.
The election commission has 5,070 centers across the country and more than 2,500 candidates are competing for 249 seats in the Wolesi Jirga, the Lower House of Parliament.
IECC Disqualifies 7 Candidates Two Days Before Elections
The Independent Election Complaints Commission’s (IECC) spokesman Ali Reza Rohani on Thursday announced seven more candidates have been disqualified.
The IECC spokesman said the seven candidates were disqualified for various reasons. Some had criminal records, others were found to be ineligible and one had Iranian citizenship, he said.
According to him, the disqualified candidates were from 6 different provinces.
Two were from Herat and one each from Wardak, Farah, Kunduz, Ghor and Balk provinces.
IEC Issues Accreditation To Over 200,000 Election Observers
Officials from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said they have issued over 200,000 accreditation cards to national and international observers and organizations, including the Afghan election watchdog organizations.
IEC spokesman Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi said 19 people who have received the cards are international observers who will monitor and oversee October 20 parliamentary elections.
Hashemi said a large number of these observers are volunteers who will work at polling stations to prevent fraud and electoral violations.
UNAMA Notes Progress By Govt Over Election Day Security
With just over a week to go for Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Thursday that it has noted, that despite significant security challenges, progress has been made by the country's security forces to create conditions for the majority of citizens to exercise their right to vote.
Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan said in the statement: "Afghanistan’s security forces are fully responsible for providing security for the elections process."
Candidates Begin Campaign For Parliamentary Elections
The campaign for upcoming parliamentary elections officialy kicked off on Friday night with candidates installing billboards in the city and posting videos and pictures on social media platforms.
The vote for the Wolesi Jirga, the Lowe House of parliament, is scheduled for October 20. However, it remains unclear if voting will take place in areas held by the Taliban.
Election monitoring organizations and some officials have said insecurity is a main challenge for the upcoming elections.
President Ghani Issues Decree On Elections
President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday issued a decree on elections to prevent any interference in the election process and to ensure the process is held in a safe and transparent environment.
This comes amid growing complaints over government’s “lack of commitment” in terms of holding transparent parliamentary elections in October.
IEC to Review 7,000 Polling Stations Nationwide
The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Sunday said that it will soon start the assessment process of nearly 7,000 polling stations across the country.
Up to one thousand more employees have been hired to conduct the review and to identify polling stations, IEC secretary Imam Mohammad Warimach said on Sunday.
Plan to classify electoral districts finalized: Faisal
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) office on Thursday said the plan to classify electoral constituencies in districts was being referred to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) within a week after its finalization.
CEO spokesman Javid Faisal told a press conference here that the upcoming Wolesi Jirga and district council elections would be managed through needed technology and legal procedures to purchase the technology had been completed.
IEC Announces Election Date: July Next Year
The IEC has announced the election date for parliamentary and district council elections – 7 July 2018. Addressing a press conference on Thursday afternoon, IEC chief Najibullah Ahmadzai said work is underway to ensure a free and fair election. Ahmadzai said the IEC has learnt much from past elections and that because of the war there are problems. He said however, that government needs to focus on vulnerable areas in order to hold successful elections.

The IEC says that work still needs to be done by the election commission before they can think of setting a date.
Govt to introduce ministers-designate in 2 weeks
Under pressure from the Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament regarding acting officials, the government on Saturday announced introducing ministers-designate within next two weeks for a vote of confidence.

Massoud to Ghani: You have got no right or power to fire me
Ahmad Zia Massoud on Tuesday strongly reacted to his dismissal as President Ashraf Ghani's Special Representative on Reforms and Good Governance.
On Monday, President Ghani in a decree ordered the dismissal of Zia Massoud and dissolved his position. The decree didn’t make clear why the move was taken.
Rejecting his dismissal, Massoud suggested that his appointment to the post came following a codified deal with the president.
“You (Ghani) have got no right or power to fire me,” Massoud said at a press conference in Kabul.

First deputy speaker of Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament on Monday said the president was playing a political game with parliament by not sending his nominees for a trust vote to fill vacant Cabinet portfolios.
