A court in Bahrain has sentenced seven anti-regime protesters to 15 years in prison as pressure on dissent mounts in the country.

According to Bahraini judicial sources on Sunday, the protesters were sentenced for allegedly attacking a Bahraini policeman in the village of Dia near the capital Manama during a demonstration in December 2012.

The incident marks the latest in a series of harsh sentences handed down to protesters in the Persian Gulf nation.

Tens of thousands of Bahraini protesters have staged an anti-regime demonstration ahead of a Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Persian Gulf country.

On Friday, around 200,000 men and women marched along 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) on a highway west of the capital Manama.

The demonstration had been organized by al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, the country’s main opposition party.

Manama, Apr. 3. (BNA) – The Capital Governorate and the Supreme Council for Women (SCW)'s Women's Support Centre held a meeting on ways to enhance joint cooperation regarding the governorate's projects and awareness-raising programmes.

The meeting is part of the SCW's efforts to activate the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women (2013-2022) in all comprehensive development fields.

Bahraini authorities continue to mount pressure on dissent as a court in Manama hands heavy prison sentences to nine people including teenagers.

The Bahraini protesters were sentenced Wednesday on charges of attacking police during anti-regime rallies, with sentences ranging from five to ten years each.

The court said the protesters were among around 30 masked men who allegedly pelted a police patrol vehicle with Molotov cocktails in the village of Nuwaidrat in March last year.

A political analyst says the people of Bahrain will remain “resolute” in their calls for freedom, stressing that the Manama regime’s heavy-handed crackdown cannot “quiet” the ongoing protests, Press TV reports.

In an interview with Press TV on Monday, Colin Cavell, a former professor at the University of Bahrain, criticized the ruling al-Khalifa regime in the Arab country for stepping up the clampdown on dissent, saying such a move will not “scare” and “quiet” the anti-regime protesters in the Persian Gulf country.

A court in Bahrain has sentenced 13 pro-democracy protesters including several teenagers to life in prison, as the Al Khalifa regime steps up its crackdown on dissent.

The court issued the verdicts on Sunday after convicting the defendants of allegedly attempting to kill a policeman and participating in an anti-regime protest outside the capital city of Manama in March 2012.

Mohammad Al-Tajir, a lawyer for the convicted Bahrainis, said another person was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the same case. He added that the defense plans to appeal.

Bahraini forces have once again attacked anti-regime protesters as demonstrations continue in various parts of the country.

On Wednesday, demonstrations against the unrelenting crackdown on pro-democracy uprising continued in several villages across the tiny Persian Gulf country.

Anti-regime demonstrations were also held in the villages of A’ali, Samahich, and Diraz, as well as on the island of Sitra, east of the capital Manama.

Opening the Gulf Radio and Television Festival in the capital Manama, Sameera Ebrahim Bin Rajab said that the motto “Our Youth is the Future of our Media” was a highly significant indicator of what needed to be done in Arab countries.

Another Bahraini has died due to inhaling tear gas fired by Saudi-backed regime forces as the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty continues its violent suppression of peaceful pro-democracy rallies in the country.

Locals said they had witnessed extensive use of tear gas and poisonous fumes when Bahraini forces sought to disperse protesters during an anti-regime demonstration in the Wadiyan area of the northeastern island of Sitra on Monday, al-Manar television network reported.

The opposition in Bahrain has called for sweeping actions, including sanctions, against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty over its violent suppression of peaceful pro-democracy rallies in the country.

In a statement addressed to the UN Human Rights Council, the opposition called for an end to all arms trade with Manama for killing and cracking down on the Bahraini people.

It has also demanded that Europe put a travel ban on high-profile Bahraini officials, including the sons of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, for torture and other human rights abuses.

Wefaq urges rights groups to take action on Bahrain prisoners

Bahrain’s main opposition party has called on human rights organizations to take immediate action on Bahraini political prisoners who are on hunger strike.

Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as the Red Cross to look into the situation in the Dry Dock prison, located on the island of Muharraq.

Around 500 prisoners are on hunger strike in the notorious prison in protest against the mistreatment of inmates.

The prisoners say they are subjected to torture during interrogation.

The Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday unanimously declared Lebanon-based Hezbollah a terrorist organization and said it would take measures against the group’s interest in the Gulf countries.
“All GCC countries are convinced that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization,” Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Ghanim bin Fadl Al-Buainain told reporters following a meeting of GCC foreign ministers in Jeddah.

Bahrain: Amnesty renews call to free jailed teachers' union chief

Rights group Amnesty International has renewed its call for the release of the jailed president of the Bahrain Teachers Association, Mahdi Abu Dheeb.

Mr Abu Dheeb was convicted by a military court of plotting to overthrow the government during unrest that swept Bahrain in 2011.

His original 10-year sentence was subsequently reduced to five on appeal.

Amnesty has described Mr Abu Dheeb as a "prisoner of conscience".

Manama: Bahrain’s justice minister on Tuesday assured sceptical members of parliament that they would not be excluded from a much-anticipated national dialogue expected to be launched between the various segments of the Bahraini society.

“There will be no exclusions of lawmakers and there will be no interference from foreign countries in the dialogue,” Shaikh Khalid Bin Ali Al Khalifa said during the parliament session after MPs expressed concerns on both counts.
