In Mauritania, many ethnic Haratin remain enslaved despite the fact that the government has passed several laws that criminalise slavery. The Haratin, of whom many have been born into slavery, continue to be victims of this as efforts by the Mauritanian government to address hereditary slavery remain weak, with almost no prosecutions or convictions reported between 2017 and 2018. Moreover, human rights activists pursuing information on slavery practices in Mauritania have been harassed, jailed or denied access to the country.
