Anwaarul Haq Kakar was sworn in as the eighth interim prime minister of Pakistan on Monday.

Kakar, clad in a grey suit, was administered oath by President Arif Alvi in a ceremony held at the Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad — which coincided with Independence Day.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Naval Chief Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi, Inter Services Intelligence chief Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum and former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif's nomination comes a day after Imran Khan was removed from the post of prime minister after losing the no-confidence vote in the 342-member Pakistan assembly.

Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday was nominated by the opposition as the joint candidate for the prime minister's election scheduled tomorrow at 2 pm local time, Pakistan news channel ARY News reported. 

President Alvi dissolves National Assembly on PM Imran's advice

President Dr Arif Alvi on Sunday dissolved the National Assembly on Prime Minister Imran Khan's advice under Article 58 of the Constitution.

"The president of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the prime minister of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly under the Article 58 (1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," according to a statement issued by the President's Secretariat.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Imran, in an address to the nation, said he had advised the president to "dissolve assemblies".

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a joint resolution to make the region an interim constitutional province.

The resolution was jointly-tabled by G-B Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan and opposition leader Amjad Hussain.

The text of the resolution read that the federal government, the prime minister and the state institutions should give G-B the status of an interim constitutional province and adequate representation in the National Assembly and other federal bodies.

Snowfall, power outages hinder polling process in hotly contested GB election

The people of Gilgit-Baltistan are heading to polling stations today (Sunday) to vote in what could be the most hotly contested election the region has ever seen.

Pictures and videos showed citizens lined up outside polling stations, wearing face masks and observing social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Many also braved heavy snowfall in the upper areas of GB to cast their vote.

There were also power outages reported at some polling stations, slowing down the voting process as staff used torches to register voter data.

No progress made in foreign funding cases against PML-N, PPP

ISLAMABAD: A scrutiny committee of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday met to take up hearings of foreign funding cases against the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) but adjourned proceedings without any progress.

Both parties were told that information from banks was awaited henceforth it was not possible to move forward and the committee will meet again after relevant information is received.

Pakistan has announced that the once-postponed election for the legislative assembly of Gilgit-Baltistan will be held on November 15, amidst India’s objection to Islamabad’s moves in the strategically-located region.

GILGIT: An All Parties Conference (APC) was held in the region under the chair of Chief Election Commissioner on Thursday to finalise the date of local bodies’ elections.

According to details, members from Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) among others were all present in the APC. Elections had been scheduled to kick off from August 18 in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan but a new date of October 28 was deliberated upon in the session.

Opposition parties to hold protests, call APC after Eid

Leaders of the opposition parties on Sunday announced their plans to "launch protests inside and outside the parliament after Eidul Fitr" and hold an All Parties Conference (APC) to "chalk out a joint strategy on how to tackle the problems facing Pakistan".

The announcement was made by PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari at a press conference that followed an iftar-dinner he hosted at Zardari House in Islamabad and which was attended by a delegation of arch rivals-turned-allies PML-N and other major opposition parties.
