Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan Sardar Raza Khan on Monday said that general elections 2018 were the most transparent elections held in the history of Pakistan as we received only 500 complaints against the results. He said this while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Cabinet of the Haripur Bar Club. Sardar Raza Khan further said that to bring more transparency in the electoral process we are using modern technology and to address the voters grievances we will also introduce electronic voting machines.

Pakistan court rejects Ex-Prime Minister Sharif's bail plea

ISLAMABAD -- A Pakistani court has rejected the bail plea from former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently serving a seven-year jail term for corruption, his party says.

The Islamabad High Court said in its February 25 ruling that Sharif couldn't be given bail on health grounds as he was already being treated at a hospital.

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: After a neck-and-neck contest, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) managed to win most of the seats in Sunday’s by-elections on 11 National and 24 provincial assembly seats with the PML-N seems to be edging past the PTI in Punjab.

Most of the seats where by-elections were held had been vacated by those elected on more than one seat in the July 25 general elections, including Prime Minister Imran Khan who won in all the five NA constituencies he had contested.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday officially declared Dr Arif Alvi of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) as the winner of yesterday's presidential election.

Dr Alvi was declared as the 13th president of Pakistan after an official count showed he had managed to bag the most number of votes from among the three candidates, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman and PPP's Aitzaz Ahsan being the other two.

ISLAMABAD: PM-elect Imran Khan took oath as the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan on Friday at a ceremony held at the President House.

Khan, who secured an 80-vote lead over PML-N’s PM nominee Shehbaz Sharif, was administered the oath by President Mamnoon Hussain.

The oath was attended by the country’s top political and military leaders. First Lady Bushra Imran was also present at the ceremony and was sitting in the first row next to NA Speaker Asad Qaiser.

329 MNAs take oath as 15th National Assembly is born

The first session of the 15th National Assembly ended on Monday after 329 members of the lower house of the parliament took oath following their election in the July 25 countrywide polls.

Outgoing NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to the MNAs-elect in the 342-member house, in what is a part of only the second democratic transition in the country's history.

Opposition parties held a protest demonstration outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Islamabad on Wednesday against alleged rigging in the July 25 general elections. PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, however, was not in attendance.

The PML-N president could not fly to Islamabad from Lahore due to bad weather, said party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The decision to hold the protest was made by the newly formed 11-party grand opposition alliance, named ‘Pakistan Alliance for Free and Fair Elections’, at a multi-party conference held in Islamabad on Friday.

Pakistan’s general election has been plunged into chaos after the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) said it would reject the result amid widespread allegations that the military was rigging the ballot in favour of the party led by the former cricketer Imran Khan.

With only a third of the vote counted by 3am – an hour after the result was officially due – Khan’s Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led in 110 seats, with the PMLN trailing on 68.

The accountability court on Friday announced the verdict in the Avenfield properties corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), handing ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond known income and 1 year for not cooperating with NAB. The sentences will run concurrently which means the former prime minister will serve 10 years in jail.

ECP announces changes in election schedule, polling date remains same

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday announced changes in the schedule for General Elections 2018, however, polling date will remain the same.

The ECP said that the date for submission of nomination papers was extended for facilitating political parties.

The nomination papers can now be submitted until June 11, the ECP said, adding that candidatures for reserved seats for women and minorities could also be submitted until the same date.

SC orders candidates to submit affidavits with nomination papers

The Supreme Court on Wednesday instructed aspiring candidates to submit an affidavit, detailing their assets, along with their nomination papers.

A five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, resumed hearing of a petition filed by former National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq challenging a Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict rejecting nomination papers, drafted by a parliamentary committee, for violating Article 62, 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Elections won't be delayed at any cost unless ECP becomes helpless: CJP said

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Monday said there was no possibility of a delay in the upcoming elections unless the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) 'becomes helpless.'  Justice Nisar made the comment during the hearing of a case regarding electoral amendments — filed by the Workers Party. 

All matters pertaining to elections must be completed on an urgent basis, the chief justice noted. Director-general of Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) noted that the code of conduct was formed with consensus from all political parties.   

Process for July 25 polls starts today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday issued the schedule for the 2018 general elections.

According to the schedule, returning officers through public notices will invite nominations from prospective candidates on June 1, while nomination papers will be filed from June 2 to 6.

The list of nominated candidates will be published on June 7. The last date for scrutiny of nomination papers is June 14, while June 19 will be the last date for filing of appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers.
