NA-122: Candidates deny violation of poll code of conduct

LAHORE: Candidates for NA-122 by-elections Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of the PML-N and Aleem Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) denied on Tuesday before the returning officer (RO) the charges of violating election’s code of conduct.

In written replies submitted through their counsels, both candidates said they were observing the code of conduct announced by the election commission.

Mr Khan said candidates for the upcoming local government elections were also running their campaign and their violations were being attributed to him by the complainant.

ATTOCK: Jahangir Khanzada, son of the slain home minister of Punjab Col (retd) Shuja Khanzada, stomped home to victory on Tuesday in the by-election of PP-16 Attock-II. A massive outpouring of sympathy decided the outcome of the vote, according to political observers.

As per unofficial results, Jahangir Khanzada polled over 41,700 votes, whereas his nearest opponent, an independent candidate, received a measly 4,420 votes.

PP-16 by-polls: ECP uses Android technology to transfer results from polling stations

ISLAMABADIn a first, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) used on Tuesday Android technology to transfer results from polling stations to ECP headquarters.

As a test project, results from 61 polling stations of PP-16 constituency of Punjab Assembly were transferred to ECP headquarters before sending hard copies to the office of district returning officers (ROs).

Polling underway in Attock's PP-16

Voting is underway on Tuesday for by-elections on PP-16 provincial assembly seat in Punjab's Attock district.

The polling began at 8am and will continue until 5pm without any pause.

The PP-16 seat fell vacant after the killing of Punjab home minister Shuja Khanzada in a suicide attack on Aug 16.

Only two candidates are contesting for by-polls in the PP-16 constituency, which are being held under the supervision of army and Rangers.

Army to be deployed at polling stations

LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to deploy army both within and outside polling stations during by-elections in Punjab.

“For ensuring transparency in the by-polls it has been decided to seek cooperation of all civil and military agencies and deploy army men both within and outside the polling stations,” ECP secretary Babar Yaqoob told the media after a meeting of the Commission chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza here on Monday.

Electioneering for the Oct 11 by-elections for the NA-122 Lahore seat reached its peak on Sunday as the main rivals — the ruling PML-N and opposition PTI — held public meetings in the same neighbourhood, Samanabad.

The seat fell vacant after an election tribunal’s decision against PML-N’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq who was then speaker of the National Assembly.

ECP office blaze swallows upcoming LB poll records in Tando Mohammad Khan

A fire in the Tando Muhammad Khan Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office has damaged three rooms and an office storeroom, where ballot boxes and old records were kept, ECP staff said.

ECP official Abdul Qadeer Rajput said the fire had destroyed old records, literature and upcoming local body election records, while records in other rooms had been salvaged. He added that efforts were under way to control the blaze.

Troops to stay at polling stations till completion of vote-count

The Election Commission of Pakistan announced on Thursday that army and Rangers would remain deployed in and outside polling stations till completion of counting of votes in the coming by-elections in Punjab.

The ECP said in a statement: “The personnel of Pakistan Army/Rangers may start patrolling / flag-march in the constituencies No NA-144 (Okara-II), NA-122 (Lahore-V), PP-147 (Lahore-XI) and PP-16 (Attock-II) before, on and after the said by-elections till midnight following the consolidation of results by the returning officer.”

ECP reserves verdict on PM’s Kissan package

The Election Com­mis­sion of Pakistan which had taken notice of the Rs 341 billion Kissan package annou­n­ced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ahead of local government elections reserved on Tuesday its judgment on the issue.

The commission had summoned secretaries of the Ministries of Information and National Food Security to justify the package and its publicity in the print and electronic media.

Committee says violation of election code should be made an ‘offence’

A sub-committee of the parliamentary committee on poll reforms on Tuesday suggested that laws should be amended to make violation of the code of conduct by candidates or political parties during the elections as an “offence”.

This was disclosed by chairman of the sub-committee Zahid Hamid while talking to a group of reporters after presiding over a meeting here on Tuesday.

Islamabad LG polls schedule withdrawn again

To be consistent with evolving laws, and to amend for its mistakes, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has withdrawn the schedule for local government elections in the federal capital, it announced on August 28.

An ECP official told Dawn that a fresh schedule will be announced around the middle of October but the polling date of November 30 will remain unchanged. He said the ECP was also awaiting the notified rules, under which elections are to be held.

LG candidates await court’s decision on Murree’s municipal status

With only three days (Oct 3) left to file nomination papers for local government elections, political parties in Murree stand confused.

Their candidates are not clear whether they should file papers for the old municipal committee or the new municipal corporation.

As many as 21 petitions and appeals have been filed with the delimitation authority against the January 5 decision of the government to convert Murree into a municipal corporation. All were dismissed without a hearing.

ECP to brief body on mock drill for voting by overseas Pakistanis

Officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan will brief a sub-committee of the parliamentary body on poll reforms about arrangements made for a mock exercise for voting by overseas Pakistanis on Tuesday.

According to the agenda of the meeting, the sub-committee headed by former law minister Zahid Hamid will also review the “final draft” of unified election laws.

Schedule for LG election in Karachi issued

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday issued the election schedule for the third phase of local government election to be held on Dec 3 in Karachi division.

According to the schedule, polling will be conducted on Dec 3 if polling date is not advanced by the ECP due to the Chehlum of Imam Hussain on the day.

In the third phase, the LG elections would be held in six districts of Karachi division — West, East, South, Central, Korangi and Malir.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is likely to scrap Nawaz Sharif’s Rs341 billion Kissan package on Tuesday.

The Kissan package was announced ahead of the local government elections in the province.

According to sources, secretaries of the Ministry of National Food and Security and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are set to appear before the ECP to justify the announcement of the package and its publicity after the issuance of the local bodies election schedule.

PM Nawaz urges Ban Ki-moon for plebiscite in Kashmir

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the sidelines of the 70th UNGA Session in New York, where he urged for a plebiscite in Kashmir, stressing on the need for implementation of the United Nation’s Security Council resolution in this regard.

The proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2015 was submitted by Fata parliamentary leader MNA Shah Jee Gul Afridi to National Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan.
