The Syrian opposition’s defense minister has resigned after reports of disagreements with the group’s head, opposition sources said on Monday.

Dissident Asaad Mustafa’s resignation from the government-in-exile highlights divisions among President Bashar al-Assad's opponents.

Mustafa, in his sixties,had been appointed to his post in November as part of a plan by the opposition National Coalition to administer rebel-held areas of the war-torn country, according to Reuters news agency.

Jordan Allows Syrian Embassy to Host Presidential Polls

Jordan said on Thursday that it does not mind allowing Syrians living in it to cast ballots in their country's presidential election at the Syrian embassy in Amman.

Syrian expatriates around the world were invited by the government of their country to go to Syrian embassies and consulates in other countries on May 28 for presidential polls, that are likely to give president Bashar al-Assad a third term in office.

El primer ministro de Siria, Wael al Halqi, ha anunciado este martes que el Gobierno ha finalizado todos los preparativos de cara a la celebración el 2 de junio de las elecciones presidenciales, según ha informado la agencia estatal siria de noticias, SANA.

Un total de 21 de las 24 personas que presentaron su candidatura a los comicios han sido rechazadas por el Tribunal Constitucional alegando que incumplen con los requisitos contemplados por la ley.

The United Nations and Arab League mediator on the conflict in Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has resigned, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Tuesday.

Standing beside Brahimi at UN headquarters in New York, Ban said he "will relinquish his duties effective May 31."

Brahimi, who gave up Tuesday after trying unsuccessfully to mediate an end to Syria's civil war, has spent his career in the diplomatic trenches of the world's most intractable conflicts.

The United States has said it will recognise the offices of the main opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) as a diplomatic foreign mission and announced plans for a $27m increase in non-lethal assistance to rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

The announcement came at the start of a visit to Washington on Monday by a Syrian opposition delegation led by Ahmad Jarba, president of the coalition, in his first official visit to the US since the SNC was set up in 2012.

Student anti-regime activists from the southern town of Swaida have declined to take part in “local council” elections overseen by the opposition National Coalition, because it has “failed to learn from past mistakes.” In recent days, pro-uprising Facebook pages from the Druze-majority province have circulated the response by the Swaida Students Coordinating Committee, which accused the Coalition of suffering from “favoritism” and a lack of clarity with regard to officials’ duties and responsibilities.

El presidente del Parlamento sirio, Mohamed Yihad al Laham, ha invitado este lunes a los "países amigos" a enviar misiones de supervisión a las elecciones presidenciales previstas para el mes de junio.

   "Es un placer para mi invitarles a enviar a un grupo de miembros de sus parlamentos y expertos en asuntos electorales para supervisar las elecciones presidenciales en nuestro país", ha indicado Al Laham en su misiva, enviada a varios países.

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad will face two other candidates in the coming June presidential election, the country's Supreme constitutional Court announced Sunday, according to The Associated Press (AP).

21 other candidates were found to be ineligible to run, according to court spokesman Majid Khadra said on state television. He did not elaborate.

An official with Syria's Supreme Constitutional Court says President Bashar Assad and two others will be candidates in coming June presidential elections.

Twenty-four candidates submitted bids to run in the June 3 election that Assad is widely expected to win.

The court's spokesman, Majid Khadra, announced on Syrian state television Sunday that only three applicants met requirements of the election law to run.

Los aspirantes entregaron sus solicitudes para concurrir a los comicios ante el Alto Tribunal Constitucional, en la jornada que finaliza el plazo para registrar candidaturas.
