 The National Umma Party (NUP) voted on Friday to appoint the head of the party’s Political Secretariat, Sara Nugdalla, as its next secretary-general.

This followed a proposal by the party chief Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi during the Central Commission meeting which started on Thursday to relieve Ibrahim al-Amin in light of his “failure” to create a consensual secretariat among other reasons.

The Sudanese National elections Commission (NEC) approved plans to prepare for the general elections slated for next year.

The electoral body held a meeting on Thursday to review arrangements made for the 2015 elections and announced that a training session will be held later this month in Port Sudan for poll with funding from the European Union (EU) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The leader of the National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, moved the meeting of the party’s Central Commission, which started on Thursday, to remove secretary-general Ibrahim al-Amin amid signs of a new split within the party.

In his lengthy opening remarks attended by representatives from other parties including the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and foreign diplomats, al-Mahdi defended this move saying that al-Amin has failed to discharge his duties and was unable to create a consensual secretariat.

Sudanese lawmakers alarmed by corruption levels in the country

A number of Sudanese lawmakers have warned that the state and the economy is under threat from a surge in levels of corruption that is coupled with growing poverty among the population.

MP Mohamed Ahmed Zein said during deliberations on the Inspector General’s report that some countries refuse to deal with Sudan due to the lack of transparency and the continued abuse of public funds.

He pointed out that more than 60,000 police officers left the force due to low salaries and went to say that the Ministry of the Interior uses its revenues to construct buildings.

SPLM-N announce deal to negotiate framework agreement as Sudan says rebels wasting time

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) announced that they have agreed to negotiate a framework agreement with the Sudanese government, while the latter described the move negatively as “a return to zero point”.

The two parties resumed peace talks on 22 April aimed at ending the nearly three-year conflict in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states. The African Union (AU) mediation team previously suspended the process after the SPLM-N rejected its draft framework agreement, sticking to a previous one signed on 28 June 2011.

Sudan’s second vice-president, Hassabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, has said that consultations are underway with political parties to develop a mechanism for comprehensive national dialogue.

The dialogue mechanism would include seven members from the government side and an equal number from the opposition.

While the “broad-based” government parties delegated president Omer Hassan al-Bashir to name their members in the dialogue mechanism, there are reports that opposition parties are facing difficulties in determining their representatives.

The secretary-general of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP), Ibrahim al-Amin, has acknowledged the existence of differences among party members, with some supporting engagement in national dialogue with the government, while others are calling for the regime to be overthrown.

Al-Amin, who spoke at a press conference on Sunday, underscored that his party’s first option is to mobilise the street in order to overthrow the regime, saying Sudan has become a “failed state”.

SRF rebels propose roadmap for peace in Sudan

The rebel alliance of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) proposed a roadmap to achieve a comprehensive solution to end war in the southern and western parts of the country and ensure democratic transition in Sudan.

But the non-rebel opposition forces in Sudan cautiously welcomed the three-phase peace plan with some saying they need to review it before taking a position while others voiced their objection to a peace process held outside the country.

Peace talks between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have once again stalled over the failure of the two parties to reach a framework agreement for direct negotiations.

The negotiating teams are in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa since 22 April, as the chief mediator, Thabo Mbeki, gave them an amended version of his initial draft framework agreed that he had delivered on 18 February before to suspend the discussions two weeks after.

The Gezira state legislative council on Thursday unanimously accepted the resignation of governor Al-Zubair Bashir Taha in accordance with Article 46/1 of the state’s 2005 interim constitution.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Taha announced that he is stepping down on instructions from president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir who wanted to bring changes at the state level. He noted that he grudgingly agreed to assume the post back in 2009.

Peace talks between the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have resumed in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Tuesday in a new bid to end the nearly three-year-long conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

Last March, the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) chief, Thabo Mbeki, suspended the talks after failing to bridge the positions of the parties on the agenda of the negotiations. He pointed out that the SPLM-N did not accept a draft framework agreement he had proposed.

NCP confirms Bashir can run for president in 2015

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has reaffirmed that its rules do not prevent president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir from running in upcoming elections.

Since March of last year, Bashir said that he would not seek his re-election in April 2015 and urged the party to select a new candidate in its general convention which is expected to take place in December 2014.

The speaker of the Sudanese parliament, Al-Fatih Izz Al-din, has expressed readiness of the National Assembly to engage in direct talks with the United States Congress in order to normalise relations and lift the US sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997.

He pointed to the negative impact of the US sanctions on women and children besides all aspects of development, life-saving drugs, technology, education, aviation, and railways.

Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has denied statements attributed to its foreign relations secretary, Bashir Adam Rahma, claiming that president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir agreed to form a transitional government for two years.

In an interview with the Qatari Al-Watan newspaper on Sunday Rahma said that Bashir accepted the transitional government which will administrate the country during the national dialogue process.

The chairman of the National Consensus Forces (NCF), Farouk Abu Issa, has reiterated the determination of the opposition alliance to overthrow the government, underscoring they wouldn’t engage in a dialogue that doesn’t lead to dismantling the regime and restoring democracy.

Last January, the president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir called upon opposition parties and rebel groups to engage in a comprehensive national dialogue to end war and restore democracy in Sudan.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has announced it would seek regional participation in the national dialogue in order to encourage all political forces to engage in it without exception.

The NCP media secretary, Yasser Youssef, said on a talk show broadcast by the state-run Radio Omdurman on Friday that his party would consult with its partners in the national dialogue in order to allow political forces which didn’t take part in the recent political roundtable to be part of the dialogue mechanism which will be developed soon.

 The opposition alliance National Consensus Forces (NCF) decided to freeze the membership of Hassan Al-Turabi party because they accepted to take part in the national dialogue process.

The NCF which gathers the Communist party and other small political forces said they suspend the Popular Congress Party (PCP) and another small formation called Justice Party, for their participation in the political process launched by president Omer Al-Bashir last January.
