Sudan’s al-Bashir threatens to punish political parties

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir on Monday said the opposition parties within the Sudan Call must choose between their alliance with the armed movements or the civic action.

In a four-day meeting held in the French capital Paris, the Sudan Call picked Sadiq al-Mahdi, the leader of the National Umma Party as the chairman of the opposition umbrella. The meeting also chose Sudan Liberation Movement leader, Minni Minnawi, as a secretary general of the coalition which encompasses political and armed groups.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) on Sunday said arrangements are underway to hold discussions with all political forces over the permanent constitution.

The semi-official Sudan Media Center (SMC) has quoted the NCP political secretary Omer Basan as saying all political forces, not only the ruling party, must participate in the constitution-making process.

“The constitution must be a product of political consensus and agreement in order to overcome a lot of problems and challenges facing the country,” he said

The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir and the Minister of State at Federal Government Chamber, Abu Al-Gasim Imam have discussed the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

Imam, who is also the chairman of the former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (Second Revolution) SLM-SR, told reporters following the meeting that they discussed the security arrangement agreement signed between his movement and the Sudanese government.

Dr Faisal outlines the future National Congress policies

The Assistant of the President of the Republic, and the Vice president of the National congress for party affairs, Dr Faisal Hassan Ibrahim, on Thursday underlined the coming period requires huge efforts in the political life of the country.

Dr Faisal pointed out that this means doubling efforts for completing drafting of the Sudan permanent constitution, naming the various commissions as agreed upon in the document of the National accord, as well as preparing a conducive political climate that would bring closer all and do away with exclusionist rhetorics.

Al-Mahdi to return to Sudan after opposition meetings

Sudan’s National Umma Party said on Wednesday that its leader Sadiq al-Mahdi has delayed to a later date his return to the country upon the recommendation of the party.

On the first of February, al-Mahdi travelled to Addis Ababa for a consultations meeting with the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on the Roadmap agreement on the political process with the government.

Opposition party calls to release its ill leader

The opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) has called to release its leader Omer al-Digair who is detained since about two months ago, pointing he has been facing a critical health situation.

Al-Digair was arrested while he was in El-Obeid the capital of North Kordofan last January, after calls by his party to protest the increase of bred price within a series of drastic austerity measures included in the budget of 2018.

The Dinka N'Gok Higher Coordination Council has welcomed the appointment of Dr. Faisal Hassan Ibrahim as the Deputy Chairman of the National Congress Party for party Affairs and Assistant of the President of the Republic .
The Council has also, welcomed the appointment of General, Salah Mohammed Abdulla as the Director of National Intelligence and Security Service and General, Jalal Edden Al-Sheikh Al-Tayeb as his Deputy.

El líder del grupo de antiguos detenidos de Sudán del Sur, Majak D'Agoot, ha afirmado este miércoles que retirarán a los miembros de la coalición de gobierno en caso de que la próxima ronda de conversaciones de paz no den resultados.

President Bashir says Sudan works to achieve political stability

The President of the Republic, Omar Bashir, has commended the role of the Sudanese Bar Association in helping implement justice and supporting due process of law.

The President on Tuesday received a delegation from the Bar Association led by its chair lawyer Osman Mohamed Al Shareef. 

The President commended the fair and free elections of the lawyers Union, saying he stands behind all issues of concern to the lawyers in the country.

Sudan Ambassador to Egypt, Abdul-Mahmoud Abdul-Haleem has reiterated the role and influence of Sudan parliament in Arab Parliament.

He said in press statements following his meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly, Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Omer , that the meeting tackled the Sudanese-Egyptian relations and reasons behind withdrawal of Sudan Ambassador from Egypt.

He added the meeting discussed relations between the National Assembly and the Foreign Ministry.

Member of Sudan’s dialogue coordination body known as 7+7 Kamal Omer said the opposition Sudan Call groups are facing significant international pressures to join the national dialogue.

Omer, who is also the political secretary of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) of the late Islamic leader Hassan al-Turabi, told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday that the doors of the dialogue would remain open for the holdout opposition groups until the time comes to hold the general assembly on 6 August.

Sudanese parliament on Monday has approved an agricultural bill allowing Saudi Arabia to reform and cultivate one million feddans of land in eastern Sudan for 99 years.

Last month, Sudan’s National Assembly unanimously approved a legal framework agreement that gives Saudi Arabia the right to cultivate lands in Upper Atbara and Setait Dam project for 99 years.

Leader of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP) al-Sadiq al-Mahdi on Wednesday said the opposition groups of the Sudan Call forces will likely sign the Roadmap Agreement after a meeting they would hold in Addis Ababa during the coming days.

Last March, the African Union High Implementation Panel (AUHIP) proposed a roadmap agreement to the Sudanese government and some opposition groups including the NUP, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement /North, Justice and Equality Movement, and Sudan Liberation Movement of Minni Minnawi.

Security measures reduced criminal activities in South Darfur: governor

The governor of South Darfur on Wednesday said the security situation has improved in the state during the past ten days after the deployment of additional forces to curb criminal attacks by armed gangs.

The increase of armed robberies and criminal violence in the Nyala which is the main commercial town in Darfur region pushed the state authorities to deploy more troops in the state city as Eid al-Fitr (festival of breaking the fast), is a peak selling season for retailers.

Sudanese security confiscates Al-Jareeda newspaper

Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) on Monday has confiscated copies of Al-Jareeda daily newspaper from the printing house without stating any reasons.

NISS has recently intensified crackdown on the newspapers. Last May, it confiscated copies of Al-Taghyeer, Al-Saiha, Al-Jareeda and Akhir Lahza newspapers for two days in a row.

Journalists working for Al-Jareeda toldSudan Tribune that the NISS agents seized 12,000 copies of the newspaper, expecting the financial loss to reach 50,000 pounds (SDG) (about $3,700 dollar).

Minister proposes to ban political activities in universities

Higher Education Minister, Sumayia Abu Kosha Tuesday proposed to ban armed political activities in the Sudanese universities .

In last April and May, several universities witnessed protests and clashes between students supporting armed groups in Darfur and the Tow Areas and those who are backing the ruling National Congress Party (NCP).

May government officials accused the armed groups of trying to export violence to the Sudanese universities through their sympathisers.

EU welcomes Sudan’s truce call for negotiated settlement

The European Union on Monday has welcomed the unilateral cessation of hostilities by the Sudanese government and called on the warring parties to move forward for peace in Sudan.

The spokeswoman for the EU’s foreign service, Catherine Ray, said the four-month unilateral truce announced earlier this month comes after a similar gesture by the alliance of rebel groups Sudan Revolutionary Front (SAF)in April 2016.

A leading member in the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) Nafie Ali Nafie has resumed verbal attacks on the opposition groups, saying all their attempts to lead a popular uprising “intifada” have failed.

Nafie resigned from his post as presidential assistant and NCP deputy chairman in December 2013 after wide changes in the government.

The National Dialogue Coordination Committee (7+7) has welcomed the ongoing regional and international efforts to persuade opposition forces and armed movements to sign an African Union brokered roadmap for peace in Sudan.

Last March, the Sudanese government signed a framework agreement calling to stop war in Blue Nile, Darfur, and South Kordofan and to engage in the national dialogue process.
