Protests continue in Iraq's southern city of Basra

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Hundreds of protesters continue to take to the streets to renew their ongoing public outcry against chronic corruption, lack of basic public services, and unemployment in the southern, oil-rich province of Basra.

An angry crowd gathered in front of the governorate building which houses the local provincial council on Thursday, but riot police and other security forces present had cordoned it off as a precaution following the destruction of the previous office last year.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced on Monday that provincial elections will be held across the country on April 20, 2020, the second time the date has been changed this year.

They were originally set to take place on Dec. 22, 2018, but IHEC announced in January that they would be postponed until November 2019, five months before the new date just announced.

“The election has been delayed for two years now,” commission member Hazim Redini told Kurdistan 24. 

Halbousi elected as new president of Iraqi Forces Alliance

The Iraqi Forces Alliance has elected Mohamed al-Halbousi, the Iraqi parliament speaker, as its president, and Falah Zaidan as the head of the parliamentary bloc.

Halbousi and Zaidan were elected during a meeting attended by more than 40 MPs of the Iraqi Forces Alliance, according to a statement by the alliance.

The National Axis Alliance, which was considered to be the largest Sunni bloc in the Iraqi parliament was divided in mid-May to two alliances; the Iraqi Forces Alliance, and the National Axis Alliance led by Khamis al-Khanjar, following internal differences.

Kurdistan’s parliament is to elect a new head of the Kurdistan region on Tuesday, amid opposition and boycott by opposition parties, which have already announced their rejection of the mechanisms adopted in re-activating the post.

PUK and Gorran Movement signed the agreements with the KDP to participate in the provincial government on condition of implementation of the agreements concluded to vote for the KDP candidate Nechirvan Barzani to fill the position.

Five candidates nominated for Kurdistan's Presidency post: Parliament

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Five candidates have nominated themselves for the post of President of autonomous Kurdistan Region, parliament announced on Sunday.

The candidates are incumbent Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Umed Abdulsalam Qadir, Mohammed Hama-Salih Omar, Rebwar Aziz Mustafa, and Hiwa Abdullah Khidir.

According to the Parliament’s earlier announcement, the candidate should not be younger than 40 years old, must be a resident of the Kurdistan Region, and maintain all civil and political rights.

Kurdish lawmakers in Iraq want committee to monitor application of Article 140 on Kirkuk

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish lawmakers in the Iraqi Parliament have reportedly submitted a document requesting the formation of a committee to monitor the implementation of an article in the Iraqi Constitution related to contested regions between Erbil and Baghdad.

As tensions rise in Kirkuk, one of the disputed areas between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq, the leaders of Kurdish factions within the Iraqi government have called for the creation of a committee to monitor the application of Article 140, Iraqi media reported on Saturday.

Iraq court rules cancellation of some votes in May election was unconstitutional

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s top court upheld on Thursday a law mandating a nationwide recount of votes in a May parliamentary election but ruled that the cancellation of overseas, displaced, and Peshmerga ballots was unconstitutional.

Parliament, which had mandated the recount after a number of political parties alleged fraud, had canceled some results such as overseas and displaced votes by amending the election law this month.
