Deadly attacks target UN peacekeepers in Mali's Gao

Four people have been killed in two separate attacks on UN targets in the city of Gao in Mali, the UN says.

In the first incident, which occurred on Tuesday, a UN peacekeeper was killed by rocket fire at a UN security forces' base in the eastern city.

Several people were also injured in the attack, which was followed by small-arms fire, the UN said.

China's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday the dead peacekeeper and four of the wounded peacekeepers were Chinese.

 Last year Kyrgyzstan’s export to Russia grew 28.6 percent, Kyrgyzstan Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Pankratov said at the 5th Kyrgyz-Russian inter-regional conference “Development of inter-regional ties in the context of Eurasian integration process,” held on June 2 in Ufa, the capital of Russia’s Bashkortostan Region.  

“The government of the Kyrgyz Republic considers it important to strengthen the dialogue between the regions of Kyrgyzstan and of the Russian Federation,” the Kyrgyz governmental press service quoted Pankratov as saying.  

South Sudan presidency agrees to review 28 states

 In unexpected move which is described as a breakthrough, the South Sudan’s presidency has agreed to review the 28 states and come up with a recommendation on the number of new states within 30 days.Kiir, First Vice President, Riek Machar and Vice President, James Wani, at the presidential palace on Wednesday.

In a joint statement to the press by the two deputies after the meeting, a committee of 15 members will be constituted from all the parties to the August 2015 peace agreement and from the international partners to come up with recommendation on new states.

Albania Leaders Mull Meeting on Judicial Reform

The leaders of Albania's two main parties, the Prime Minister and Socialist leader, Edi Rama, and Lulzim Basha, chairman of the Democratic Party, are inching towards a meeting this week to find a solution to the deadlock on judicial reform.

As the deadline for Albania to complete judicial reforms needed to open EU accession negotiations comes close to expiring, a meeting between the leaders is seen as urgent, to end the deadlock and enable parliament to pass the reform in June.

Indonesia Detains Hundreds Demanding Release of Prisoners

Indonesian police on Tuesday detained more than 300 demonstrators who were demanding the release of political prisoners in restive Papua province, a rights group said.

Veronica Koman of the Jakarta-based Indonesian Legal Aid Institute said about 40 separatists are currently jailed in the province. A low-level insurgency for an independent Papua has continued since the region was transferred from Dutch to Indonesian rule in the 1960s.

Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir would head his country’s delegation participating in the upcoming Arab League (AL) summit which will be held in the capital of Mauritania, Nouakchott in July, said Sudan’s state foreign minister

The Sudanese president visited Mauritania two times since the ICC issued the arrest warrants.Bashir is under two International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants since 2008 for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in Darfur.

A hawkish Lebanese Sunni politician has won local elections in the second largest city of Tripoli in a result that marks a blow to long-established Sunni leaders and risks reviving tensions among rival sectarian groups there.

The municipal elections under way nationwide for a month have been seen as an important indicator of sentiment in Lebanon, where a political crisis has twice forced the postponement of parliamentary elections that should have been held in 2013.

Beirut-Lebanon’s fourth and final round of municipal elections ended on Sunday after voters in the North and Akkar Governorates cast their ballots amid a calm situation and a turnout of around 40 percent.

While the competition was mainly development-based in many villages and towns in the North and Akkar, the political confrontation was obvious in several regions.
