Sudan Detaining Dozens of Students After Protests

Sudanese authorities have detained dozens of students and activists without charge since protests erupted on university campuses in mid-April, Human Rights Watch said.

Security forces cracked down on the demonstrations in the capital, Khartoum, and other cities using tear gas, rubber bullets and, in some cases, live ammunition, the New York-based rights group said in a statement.

Abbas: We are ready to receive Arab refugees

Arab refugees are welcome in the occupied Palestinian territories, Arabs48.com reported Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas announcing yesterday.

Palestinian NGOs are ready to send aid and humanitarian delegations all over the world to support humanitarian efforts, he added.

Speaking at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey, Abbas said that the PA is supporting international efforts to find peaceful solutions aiming to maintain safety and unity in the region.

Kurdish-led SDF launches offensive on Syria's Raqqa

Kurdish-led forces have massed thousands of fighters as part of a military offensive to take over Raqqa, the northern Syrian city controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group for more than two and a half years. 

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed coalition of armed groups led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), said it has mobilised thousands of fighters in the countryside north of Raqqa. 

Fighting was reportedly ongoing on Tuesday near Ain Issa, situated 55km from the ISIL-controlled city. 

Kyrgyzstan protests over Kazakh minister's toilet cleaning comment

Kyrgyzstan's foreign ministry has summoned a Kazakh diplomat after Kazakhstan's culture and sports minister said he felt sorry for Kyrgyz migrant labourers having to clean public toilets in Russia.

The Kyrgyz foreign ministry said in a statement late on Tuesday that Arystanbek Mukhamediuly's comments were insulting, "had provoked negative reaction from the Kyrgyz public and were not in line with the allied spirit of Kyrgyz-Kazakh relations".

Gaza calls for death penalty

Over the last three years, murders in cases of theft, robbery and physical attack in the Gaza Strip have become common. Money changer Ameen Sharab from Khan Yunis was stabbed to death in a robbery attack on May 30, 2013. Mohammed Mahdi and his nephew Anas Tammous from Deir al-Balah refugee camp were killed against the backdrop of a family dispute on June 24, 2013. Aliyan al-Talbani from Deir al-Balah city was killed in an armed robbery on July 31, 2013. Money changer Fadel al-Astal from Khan Yunis was killed in a fight over bank checks in May 2014.

TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) – Ahmad Jannati was appointed as the chairman of 5th Assembly of Experts which began to work on Tuesday.

At the opening session of the 5th Assembly of Experts held on Tuesday morning in Tehran, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati was elected as the chairman of the 5th Assembly of Experts on Tuesday.

Accordingly, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati received 51 votes out of 86, Ayatollah Ebrahim Amini and Ayatollah Seyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi also got 21 and 13 votes, respectively.

Militant group claims attack on UN peacekeepers in Mali

A Malian militant group Friday claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on a UN peacekeeping convoy in northern Mali that left five people dead and injured many others, local media reported.

Ansar Dine, an armed group based in the northern part of the country, led by Iyad Ag Ghaly, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

Malaysia to impose travel bans on government critics

Malaysia is able to impose a three-year travel ban on its citizens who discredit or ridicule the government, the Star newspaper reported on Wednesday, as criticism against the scandal-tainted Prime Minister Najib Razak grows.

Malaysia's immigration department enforced this ruling several months ago in a move to safeguard the country's image, the newspaper said, quoting an unnamed source.

The immigration director general Sakib Kusmi confirmed to the paper the existence of such a provision. Reuters could not independently verify the report that the penalty had been used.

MP decries unclear reason for candidate’s elimination

Iranian MP Ahmad Tavakoli has expressed serious reservations about the Guardian Council’s disqualification of Minoo Khaleghi, the candidate who won the third-highest number of votes in Isfahan, and said the lack of transparency around this decision compromises the council’s credibility.

Tavakoli writes in his Telegram note that such an action is unprecedented and the public outrage is has triggered is only reasonable.
