UAE set for FNC election

Thirty-six polling stations have been prepped across the country to receive voters for the Federal National Council (FNC) elections that will take place tomorrow from 8am until 8pm.

Voters can pick candidates through the electronic voting system which can be accessed by entering the National ID and is the only certified document which authorises its holder to practise his/her electoral right.

The National Elections Committee (NEC) said on Thursday that it has completed all arrangements and procedures.

Justice and Development Party (AKP) Vice Chairman Mehmet Ali Şahin’s suggestion that Turkey’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) does not have the authority to move polling stations is correct, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Secretary-General Gürsel Tekin has said.

“I congratulate Mehmet Ali Şahin on his status as a legal expert. There is, for the first time, a correct voice from the AKP,” Tekin told the Hürriyet Daily News on Oct. 2. 

“I agree with what [Şahin] has said. The constitution is clear. The YSK cannot take such a decision,” he added.

Two of the four suspects who were detained after a physical assault that injured prominent Turkish journalist Ahmet Hakan have been revealed as members of the Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Four men, arriving in a black Honda at 12:35 a.m. on Oct. 1, attacked the daily Hürriyet columnist in Istanbul’s Nişantaşı neighborhood as he was returning home after hosting his television program on CNNTürk.

Political tension in Turkey's domestic politics was amply reflected in the opening of the new legislative year in Parliament on Thursday, with no opposition party leader present as the president addressed Parliament.

Deputies from the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) left Parliament when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took the floor to deliver his speech on the occasion of the opening session.

A battle of words sometimes took place between some other opposition deputies and Erdoğan during his speech.

The Election Commission of Pakistan announced on Thursday that army and Rangers would remain deployed in and outside polling stations till completion of counting of votes in the coming by-elections in Punjab.

The ECP said in a statement: “The personnel of Pakistan Army/Rangers may start patrolling / flag-march in the constituencies No NA-144 (Okara-II), NA-122 (Lahore-V), PP-147 (Lahore-XI) and PP-16 (Attock-II) before, on and after the said by-elections till midnight following the consolidation of results by the returning officer.”

FNC elections: 48 hours 'electoral silence' from October 1

The National Election Committee (NEC) has announced that the electoral process for the Federal National Council Elections 2015 will enter a period of electoral silence for 48 hours, starting from October 1 to October 3, on election day.

The NEC has urged all candidates and their representatives as well as the media to refrain from any form of election campaign during this period.

Jassar quits after ruling

Minister of Electricity and Water and Public Works Ahmad Al-Jassar submitted his resignation yesterday and did not attend the regular meeting of the Cabinet as a result. Jassar tendered his resignation after the lower court on Monday sentenced him and 14 former and current officials from the ministry of electricity and water to a two-year jail term and dismissal from service, with an option to pay KD 1,000 to suspend the imprisonment. They were also fined KD 20,000 each.

Municipal polls: 6,140 candidates in the fray

A total of  6,140 men and women candidates will contest the third municipal elections to be held on Dec. 12, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and published Wednesday by Makkah daily.

The report said the candidates consist of 5,275 men and 865 women who are participating for the first time as voters and candidates.

According to the report, Asir Province has 47 men but no women candidates. With 1,061 contenders, Riyadh region has the largest number of candidates consisting of 899 men and 162 women.

Hürriyet columnist and CNN Türk program host Ahmet Hakan legally requested a security detail to be appointed by the Turkish government 17 days before a physical attack targeting him on Oct. 1, legal documents show, while the Istanbul Governor’s Office said that Hakan did not request security on the day of the attack as he was granted ‘security upon call'.

Abbas Says PA Not Bound by Agreements With Israel

The Palestinian Authority will no longer uphold the agreements it has signed with Israel over the last 20 years, PA President Mahmoud Abbas told the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

Terming this decision a response to Israel’s policies in the West Bank, Abbas said Israel “must assume all of its responsibilities as an occupying power.”

Abbas used the speech to assail Israel, accusing it of systematically violating all its agreements with the Palestinians and of trying to destroy the two-state solution.

FNC elections: Over 37,000 vote during early polls

Over 37,660 people cast their votes in the three days of early voting for the Federal National Council elections 2015. Early polls were held at nine polling stations from September 28 to 30.

Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister for FNC Affairs and Head of the National Election Committee (NEC), said an electoral silence will follow for 48 hours, starting from October 1 until the election day on October 3.
