Schedule for LG election in Karachi issued

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday issued the election schedule for the third phase of local government election to be held on Dec 3 in Karachi division.

According to the schedule, polling will be conducted on Dec 3 if polling date is not advanced by the ECP due to the Chehlum of Imam Hussain on the day.

In the third phase, the LG elections would be held in six districts of Karachi division — West, East, South, Central, Korangi and Malir.

ECP likely to scrap PM’s Kissan package today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is likely to scrap Nawaz Sharif’s Rs341 billion Kissan package on Tuesday.

The Kissan package was announced ahead of the local government elections in the province.

According to sources, secretaries of the Ministry of National Food and Security and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are set to appear before the ECP to justify the announcement of the package and its publicity after the issuance of the local bodies election schedule.

Activists, Police Clash Near Energy Ministry

Activists from “We Want Accountability” movement and security forces clashed on Tuesday near the Energy Ministry after the protesters blocked one of the facility's entrances.

Ministry employees told them that the ministry is a red line, refusing to remain trapped in their offices in Beirut's Corniche al-Nahr area.

But the demonstrators stressed they want accountability, saying their intention is not to ransack the ministry.

The clash caused the glass door of the entrance to be broken.

Residents and civil society activists staged a new sit-in Sunday outside the Naameh landfill to condemn government plans to reopen the controversial facility for seven days, vowing to unveil an alternative waste management plan on Monday.

“We do not like to obstruct projects but the state's promises are untruthful,” residents at the protest said in a statement, vowing an “open-ended sit-in” to prevent the reopening of the landfill “even for a single hour.”

As many as 400,000 voters are at risk of being unable to cast their ballots in the Nov. 1 general election, as many voting stations in the country's eastern and southeastern provinces may be transferred due to a lack of security, which the opposition sees as a move to increase the ruling party's chances.

 

Residents of several villages and neighborhoods in the region will be required to vote elsewhere if the country's top election authority approves decisions made by local election boards.

PACE to observe upcoming snap election

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will send a delegation to Turkey to observe the upcoming Nov. 1 snap election.

According to information acquired by Today's Zaman, PACE will recruit a team of observers consisting of 30 to 35 individuals to monitor the Turkish polls on Nov. 1.

In the previous general election on June 7, a 29-member PACE delegation, led by Tiny Kox from the Unified European Left Group, visited Turkey to observe the polls.
