ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) -- He was known as the "Lord of Algeria" and was the longest serving intelligence chief in the world - a J Edgar Hoover-like figure who dominated Algerian politics and had files on everyone.

Yet on Sunday, Mohamed "Toufik" Mediene was summarily fired by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, ending his 25-year tenure at the head of Algeria's fearsome intelligence service, the Directorate of Intelligence and Security.

Abu Dhabi: The National Election Committee (NEC) announced the procedures to use the electronic voting system during the Federal National Council Elections 2015.

Voting will be carried out electronically during the period of early voting from September 28-30 as well as on Election Day on October 3.

As discontent continues between the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) and Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission (IEC) over reform packages, an IEC official said Saturday that the election management body was getting close to announcing a proposed date for the nation's parliamentary elections.

Speaking to TOLOnews, Aziz Bakhtyari, an IEC commissioner said that the commission was preparing to submit a proposal containing the date for parliamentary elections to President Asharf Ghani within two days.

Salafist Nour Party to run for two party-based electoral districts in upcoming elections

The ultra-conservative Salafist Nour Party announced on Friday it is going to run only for two party-based electoral lists in the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to an official statement by the party.

Younis Makhyoun, head of the party, said that the party has decided to run for the Cairo and East and South Delta district, and West Delta district.

The party will be running for 45 seats in the Cairo and East and South Delta (six governorates) district. It will run for 15 seats in the West Delta (three governorates) district.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi accepted on Saturday the resignation of the cabinet of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, MENA state news agency reported.

 

The cabinet had met earlier on Saturday and decided to submit their resignation to the president, according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

The president reportedly ordered the cabinet to continue carrying out their current responsibilities until a new cabinet is formed, and asked Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail to become prime minister and form a new cabinet.

Egypt's High Elections Committee (HEC) accepted on Thursday the application of steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz to stand as a nominated candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections despite a court order that was due to disqualify him from the race.

The High Elections Committee (HEC) announced on Wednesday that it will redraw the boundaries of two electoral constituencies, one in Cairo and one in the Upper Egypt governorate of Qena, in accordance with an Administrative Court ruling issued on Monday.

 

On Monday, the Administrative Court ruled that the cabinet must redraw two constituency boundaries due to administrative errors committed.

Egypt's centre-left Constitution Party is set to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections, member of the high board Khaled Dawoud told Ahram Online.

 

Dawoud said that the party’s secretary general Tamer Gomaa held a vote among the party members in which the majority voted ‘yes’ to participation in the upcoming elections.
