Last month, a National Election Committee official warned against illegal practices ahead of the upcoming Federal National Council elections.

These include racial intolerance, buying votes by way of gifts and promises and exaggerations in campaigns that may lead to slander and insults, according to Al Ittihad, The National’s Arabic-language sister newspaper.

There was no official acknowledgement of any breaches during the previous election, in 2011.

General Legislation Committee approves draft anti-terrorist law

The General Legislation Committee approved, Wednesday evening, the draft law on fight against terrorism and money laundering, which will be submitted to the House of People’s Representatives (HPR). 

 Amendments were made to the draft law regarding the protection of witnesses, infiltrated persons and the accused, and the definition of some notions related to terrorism, commission president Abeda Kefi told TAP.

Bosnian Serbs to Hold Referendum on State Courts

The assembly of Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity, Republika Srpska, has voted on Wednesday to hold a referendum on confidence in the country's state justice system and in the authority of High Representative to Bosnia.

Out of 76 deputies present, 45 voted in favor while 31 abstained. The referendum will be held in mid-September. 

Sudan’s JPF chairman discusses return of NUP leader with presidential assistant

The chairman of the Just Peace Forum (JPF), al-Tayeb Mustafa, on Wednesday said he discussed with the presidential assistant, Ibrahim Mahmoud, the return of the opposition National Umma Party’s leader, al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, from his voluntary exile.

The NUP leader left the country in August 2014 after a month in jail over remarks he made against the government militia known as the Rapid Support Force (RSF).

Ruler of Sharjah issues decree on SCC elections

Article 3 of the decree stipulates that each constituency will have an electoral college with members named by the Ruler.

Sharjah - His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued Emiri Decree No. (59) of year 2015 on the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) elections.

Egyptian constitution needs time to be effective: Sisi

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has said the constitution is great but more time is needed for its goals to be achieved, state news agency MENA reported.

 

“The Egyptian constitution was very ambitious and great but it needs more time to become effective,” he said in a speech on Tuesday.

There has been debate in society about the constitutionality of several draft laws, as well as current laws, including draft anti-terror legislation.

Le découpage électoral divise toujours l'opposition et la majorité Les quatre leaders de l'opposition doivent revoir une nouvelle fois ce vendredi le ministre de l'Intérieur, Mohamed Hassad, pour lui remettre leurs réponses sur le découpage électoral, leur dernier cheval de bataille.

Le gouvernement affirme qu'il n'a pas de problème avec le découpage électoral et estime même que le dialogue avec l'opposition sur le sujet a connu des avancées significatives, en particulier lors de la dernière réunion de Hassad avec l'opposition, mardi.

SPLM-N says it received no invitation for meeting with AU mediator

The rebel group of Sudan People Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) denied media reports published in Khartoum claiming that the head of the African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) Thabo Mbeki invited the group’s Secretary-General Yasir Arman to travel to Addis Ababa for consultations.

SPLM-N spokesperson Ardol Mubarak blamed this report on a member of the Sudanese government negotiating team by the name of Hussein Karshum.
