Egypt cabinet to discuss constitutionality of election laws amendments

Amendments to three laws aimed at paving the way for Egypt's long-delayed parliamentary elections are expected to be discussed by the cabinet in a plenary meeting this week. 

The three laws regulate the division of electoral constituencies, the workings of the House of Representatives, and the exercise of political rights.

Malian Rivals Sign Peace Deal

An alliance of Tuareg-led rebels and the Malian government signed a peace deal on Saturday which is meant to draw a line under a 2012 uprising.

The Algerian-brokered deal, signed by a representative of the rebel Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) in the Malian capital Bamako, hands greater autonomy to the sparsely populated northern region of Mali in a bid to put an end to a cycle of four uprisings since independence from France in 1960.

Draft law on constitutional court: steering committee finalises work

The steering committee responsible for developing the organic draft law on the constitutional court within the Ministry of Justice has finalised its work this week.

 

Chaired by lawyer Amin Mahfoudh, the committee has handed the draft law to Minister of Justice Mohamed Salah Ben Aissa to send his comments before its submission to the cabinet meeting next week.

“Albanian courts have become like burlesques and I’m looking forward to autumn when we will pass the package of the reform in justice”.

This was said by PM Edi Rama a day ago, warning a revolution in the Albanian justice system.

Mr. Rama says that he considers courts as “the most corrupt, abusive and ridiculous powers that have made Albania a disgrace”.

Recalling the national operation against the theft of power supply, Rama warns: “What we have done with power supply is nothing to what we have done with the judicial system”.

MEP Urges Albania Parties to Cut Crime Links

Eduard Kukan, former Slovak foreign minister and Member of the European Parliament, on Friday urged Albania's parties to respect the law and to fulfil promises to ban people with criminal backgrouns from holding or stand for office.  

Speaking ahead of the local elections, he called them "an important test for the consolidation of democratic processes in Albania and the country's further EU integration.

Leaders of the main Bosniak and Croat parties in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Party of Democratic Action, SDA, and the Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ, have started talks with parties on forming a new ruling coalition. 

Some Western diplomats have expressed concerns that the new coalition, possibly including a larger number of smaller parties, could be even more difficult to manage than the last government.  

Candidates gear up for municipal election

JEDDAH: The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs has set up 85 elections centers for women candidates and voters in Riyadh, with 10 on standby for emergency purposes.

Haifa Al-Nassar, director general of the women’s department of the Riyadh secretariat, said that there were no seat quotas on councils for either women or men. 

“Whoever gets the most votes will win the seat,” she said.

Somalia leader says its army to end war on Al Shabab

Somalia’s Prime Minister, said in an interview with VOA Somalia service that government would soon take over held Al Shabaab areas in south of Somalia’s lower and middle Juba regions, Shabelle reports.

PM Sharmarke said that his government is launching very big operation to re-capture militants held areas in a bid to bring them back to Somalia army.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sharmaarke stressed that it a dispute between his authorities and Interim Juba administration would be solved after Somali parliament ousted regional Jubaland representatives’ council in a vote of no-confidence.

Palestinian unity government 'to resign over Gaza row'

The Palestinian Authority's unity government will resign, President Mahmoud Abbas has said.

He told his Fatah faction that the cabinet had to be dissolved because the rival Hamas movement would not allow it to operate in Gaza, which it dominates.

But a Hamas spokesman said it rejected any unilateral dissolution.

The technocratic cabinet, comprising 17 independent ministers, was sworn in a year ago to try to end a long-running rift between Fatah and Hamas.

Egypt court upholds death sentence against ex-president Morsi

A Cairo court on Tuesday sentenced ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi to death and to life in jail in two different trials, as Egyptian courts continue to rule in cases against alleged supporters of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood group from which he hails.

 

The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Morsi and five others, including top Brotherhood figures Mohamed Badie, Saad El-Katatni and Essam El-Erian, to death over the 2011 Wadi Natroun prison break case.
