Egypt: Polls suggest ex-military chief el-Sisi wins presidency in a landslide

Former Egyptian military chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is poised to win the country's presidential election in a landslide -- though the fairness of the vote has been questioned.

Exit polls suggest el-Sisi won 95.3% of the vote, while opponent Hamdeen Sabahy garnered only 4.7%, according to data from the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research and the Egyptian TV channel MBC Masr.

People of this region have been busy over the last few months voting in many elections — parliamentary, local, presidential and referenda. Yet, most of it seems predetermined with no surprises in results. Though elections in other parts of the world, especially in established democracies, are witnessing declining turnout of voters, people’s participation in elections in the region is on the rise. This is not only due to the region’s thirst for democracy, but is in part a by-product of the so-called Arab Spring witnessed more than three years ago.

MK rejects 196 election disputes

The Constitutional Court (MK) refused to process 196 cases of legislative election disputes on Wednesday evening.

Lawsuits on 192 disputes were filed by political parties, while the remainder were from individual candidates.

“The cases will not be continued to authentication examinations,” said presiding judge Hamdan Zoelva in reading out the interlocutory verdict on the 2014 legislative election dispute cases at the court as quoted bytribunnews.com.

Tight race in W. Java, Jokowi predicts

Presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who is nominated by a coalition led by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), secured support from former West Java Governor Solichin GP on Thursday.

He said support from such an influential local figure would be essential for his presidential bid.

“West Java is particularly challenging. The race will be pretty tough here. With support from all of you and Pak Solichin GP, I’m sure that we will win here,” Jokowi said.

Kalla receives support from Indonesians in Egypt

A number of Indonesian expatriates living in Egypt spoke with vice-presidential candidate Jusuf Kalla via video link on Wednesday, conveying their support for the former vice president who is the running mate of presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

"We are declaring an alliance of Indonesians in Egypt to show our support for Jokowi and Kalla to become Indonesia's next president and vice president," said a student via the video conference.

Somali cabinet approves constitution review commission

The Somali cabinet on Thursday (May 29th) appointed a five-member committee for the Constitution Review and Implementation Commission, eight months after the government called for the establishment of the commission. 

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, who chaired the cabinet meeting, welcomed the appointment of the committee members, who he said are all knowledgeable about the constitution.

BEIJING, May 29 (Bernama) -- A Cabinet appointment awaits Gerakan President Datuk Mah Siew Keong if he wins the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election on Saturday.

Malaysian Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was ready to give a commitment here.

"I can make a commitment here, if Datuk Mah wins the Teluk Intan by-election, then by virtue of being Gerakan president, he will be appointed a member of the Cabinet," Najib told the Malaysian media covering his six-day visit to China here.

Le parti Afek Tounes a appelé dans la journée du jeudi 29 mai 2014  tous les responsables  à rendre des comptes sur ce  qu’il considère comme un échec  général dans la lutte contre le terrorisme notamment dans l’opération de Kasserine. 

Afek Tounes appelle Moncef Marzouki et le ministre de l’Intérieur Lotfi Ben Jeddou  à rendre des comptes et appelle à former une commission neutre et efficace pour élaborer un rapport  sur les stratégies nationales pour lutter contre le terrorisme dans un délai ne dépassant pas un mois. 

 

PKR takes action against Chegubard

PETALING JAYA: Badrul Hisham Shahrin, better known as Chegubard, has been suspended from PKR with immediate effect following his recent media outbursts criticising the party’s election process.

PKR disciplinary board chairman Datuk Dr Tan Kee Kwong said Badrul had also been issued a show-cause letter as to why he should not be sacked from the party.

“He has made a press statement claiming the election process is dirty and not transparent.

Turkey’s top court rules YouTube ban violates freedom of speech

The Constitutional Court ruled on May 29 that the ruling to block YouTube violated the rights of users and freedom of speech.

The Constitutional Court reviewed three separate appeals on the ban imposed on March 27 without a court decision on the YouTube.  One of the applications is filed by the company itself, while the others are filed by President Metin Feyzioğlu of the Union of Turkey’s Bar Associations (TBB) and scholar Kerem Altıparmak.
