Lebanon's President Michel Sleiman urged squabbling politicians on Saturday to choose a successor to his post before the end of his term as politicians from the Western-backed March 14 alliance flocked to parliament in a show of force against presidential void.

During a farewell speech marking the end of his six year term, Sleiman also said that dialogue was the only way to overcome deep divisions in the country, which is struggling to cope with political and security spillover from Syria's civil war.

Le projet de révision de la Constitution manque de sérieux et les amendements proposés sont inconsistants, a estimé ce vendredi le président du RCD. « Les consultations décidées autour d’une révision consensuelle de la Constitution, avec notamment la classe politique, ont essuyé un cinglant rejet de l’opposition. Le projet de Constitution adressé aux partis politiques confirme le manque de sérieux de la démarche et l’inconsistance des amendements proposés. Aucun problème fondamental n’a été abordé.

The Secretary General of the rebel Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement/North (SPLM-N), Yasser Arman, has denounced the detention of the National Umma Party (NUP) leader, al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, calling upon the latter to work with the rebel alliance in order to overthrow the regime.

Arman said in press statements on Friday that president Omer Hassan al-Bashir is not serious about introducing true democratic change, saying the latter’s call for comprehensive national dialogue is only aimed at making cosmetic changes and reproducing his regime.

Le secrétaire général du parti UPL, Maher Ben Dhia a déclaré queue son parti refuse d’entrer dans des  alliances avant les élections parce queue selon lui la loi électorale n’encourage pas dans ce sens. 
Ben Dhia a également déclaré queue le président de l’UPL Slim Riahi sera le premier candidat aux élections présidentielles.

Les membres du bureau exécutif de Nidaa Tounes, réunis, aujourd’hui, 23 mai 2014, ont approuvé l’organisation du premier congrès constitutif du parti le 15 juin prochain. Ce congrès permettra la restructuration du parti sur des bases démocratiques, a indiqué le communiqué  publié suite à l’achèvement de la réunion.

La commission chargée de l’organisation du congrès étudiera les choix à faire pour la campagne électorale du parti, a noté le bureau exécutif, dans le même communiqué.

In one of their many points of friction, presidential hopeful and Knesset member Reuven Rivlin heard that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara accused him of involvement in the choice of journalist Rino Tzror as one of the torch lighters at Israel’s Independence Day ceremony. The ceremony panel that picked the veteran, respected journalist explained that through his work Tzror “serves as a mouthpiece for those citizens who feel they are on the margins of society in Israel and raises pointed human dilemmas and painful social problems.”

Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Gen. Moeldoko said he had requested the government to issue a regulation- in- lieu- of-law (Perppu) in order to guarantee TNI neutrality during the upcoming presidential election on July 9.

"The existing law only regulates military neutrality during the legislative elections, not the presidential election. Therefore we should push the government to issue a regulation right away, “he said on Friday.
