TELUK INTAN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described the straight fight for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat on May 31 between Barisan Nasional and DAP as a “50-50 battle”.

Speaking to reporters after nomination for the by-election ended yesterday, Muhyiddin said the two-week campaign period would decide the outcome.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong will square off against DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, the political secretary of Gelang Patah MP and party adviser Lim Kit Siang, in the by-election on May 31.

On May 15, the fourth parliamentary session was held to elect the president of Lebanon. For the fourth consecutive time, the session was postponed due to the lack of a quorum. A new session was scheduled for May 22, and this could be the last or next-to-last session before the constitutionally specified deadline for electing a president ends at midnight on May 24.

PKR polls: With most votes in, Azmin set to retain No 2

PETALING JAYA: Incumbent PKR deputy president Azmin Ali looks set to retain the post as he widened his lead with 12,250 votes, leaving behind his close rival Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with more than 4,000 vote margin.

In an official result released by PKR on Monday night, the Selangor mentri besar garnered 8,123 votes followed by outgoing secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail with 6,997 votes.

Less than two weeks before presidential elections kick off in Egypt, activists on social media are mocking the two competing candidates, former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, via hashtags*. 

“Every citizen taking a minibus to work should let his fellow citizen sit on his lap. This way the minibus will take [double] the passengers - imagine then how much diesel will be saved,” one user joked.

Sabahi is married and has one daughter and one son. 

 

Sabahi studied Mass Communication at Cairo University in 1975. During his college years, the Nasserist politician began his political activism and ran for Student Union elections. 

 

Iraq's Maliki 'set to win elections'

The coalition led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's won the most seats in Iraq's parliamentary elections last month, boosting his chances for a third term in office, election officials said.

Monday’s results from the election commission showed Maliki's State of Law alliance garnered 92 out of 328 parliamentary seats, with the incumbent himself winning more than 721,000 personal votes.

Both were by far the highest such figures from the April 30 election.

TELUK INTAN: There is an obvious swing of support from the Chinese community to Barisan Nasional in the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat by-election, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).

He said many people, including those from the business community had told him that only Barisan could bring development to the constituency.

Apart from that, Liow said the community had also started to realise that the DAP had betrayed them after last year’s general election.

Elections Commission Concludes Registration of Palestinian Electorate

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) announced, in a statement on Monday, the completion of the data entry and processing of information of new registrants during the latest registration exercise that took place from 16-20 March 2014.

The total number of registrants in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has reached 1,904,911, i.e. 79.5% of the total eligible registrants who turned 17 years and above, said the statement.

GEORGE TOWN: The allegation by a Bukit Gelugor by-election independent candidate that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had secretly expressed his support for PAS’ hudud in Kelantan is a lie.

Lim’s political secretary Wong Hon Wai in a statement on Monday said that the Chief Minister has never supported PAS’ Private Members Bill to implement its brand of hudud in his capacity as DAP secretary-general.

“Lim has also said that hudud will never be implemented in Penang.

The Syrian opposition’s defense minister has resigned after reports of disagreements with the group’s head, opposition sources said on Monday.

Dissident Asaad Mustafa’s resignation from the government-in-exile highlights divisions among President Bashar al-Assad's opponents.

Mustafa, in his sixties,had been appointed to his post in November as part of a plan by the opposition National Coalition to administer rebel-held areas of the war-torn country, according to Reuters news agency.
