Women may get 79 or 14 percent of the total seats in the House of Representatives following April's legislative election; a figure that was lower than the historic high of 18 percent or 103 seats in the 2009 election, researchers said Monday.
This is despite more women candidates, accounting for 37 percent or 2,467 of the total 6,619 candidates, contesting the 560 House seats.

Jakarta. Indonesian presidential frontrunner Joko Widodo has joined hands with the country’s most popular Islamic party, cementing the surprise resurgence of Muslim parties in this year’s election and possibly renewing their voice in the new government.
The National Awakening Party (PKB) on Saturday became the latest party to back Joko’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and his bid for president on July 9.

Salma Baccar, présidente du bloc démocratique a indiqué que les députés du bloc et d’autres députés à l’ANC, vont examiner une pétition avant de prendre la décision de porter plainte contre le député Ibrahim Kassas, suite à ses déclarations qui portent atteinte aux femmes, durant la séance d’adoption du projet de la loi électorale.
Cette plainte pourrait être signée par les députés mais aussi par les représentants de la société civile par la suite, a expliqué Salma Baccar.
GEORGE TOWN: An independent candidate contesting in the Bukit Gelugor by-election has claimed that he is still a member of PAS, and not Umno as claimed by certain Opposition party leaders.
"I am a PAS member and several top party (PAS) leaders have known me since my early involvement in politics," said Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar (pic).
Mohamed Nabi Bux, 63, denied he was an Umno member as alleged by PAS leaders and said its deputy president Mohamad Sabu had even given a ceramah (talk) at his house in Kampung Banjar, Gombak, back in 2000.
