ECC Chided For Delayed Disqualifications

Despite provincial council campaigns having started 10 days ago, the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) has still not completed its review of candidates' qualifications. Many candidates who have been disqualified since the start of the campaign period have openly aired criticisms of the ECC. 

"The weakness is in the Election Complaints Commission," recently disqualified provincial council candidate Said Naeem Kashfi said. "This Commission has been recently established and still does not have an office in provinces like Maidan Wardak and others."

With presidential campaigns entering their final stretch just weeks before the April vote, violent attacks on campaign workers have increased, especially on Abdullah Abdullah's team.

Abdullah's campaign has reported nine of targeted attacks since the start of the campaign season in February, far more than any of the other candidates.

A member of the Golkar Party said youngsters nowadays were more politically aware and  would vote on election day.

The coordinator of the Epicenter of Nationalism (CenSa), the Golkar Party’s youth wing organization, Andrew Prasatya said the upcoming election offered the youth the opportunity to be involved in politics.

"Abstainers [will] only destroy the pillars of our democracy. This is the time to take a stand for the nation’s future, he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Saturday.

The Democratic Party will announce its presidential candidate by the end of April or two weeks after the legislative election.

“Wait until the end of April for the results [of the convention],” Democratic Party executive chairman Syarifuddin Hasan said on Saturday as quoted by Antara News Agency.

Syarifuddin was confident that the party would have a presidential candidate that would suit the public, adding that the convention’s participants were not very popular despite being competent.

Gerindra Party chairman Suhardi said his party still believed in its presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto despite the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's (PDI-P) decision to name popular Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo as its candidate.

NOWSHERA: Key policymakers of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) endorsed the freshly constituted government peace committee on Friday, describing its members as experienced hands who were well acquainted with the culture of the tribal belt, said the group’s intermediary Professor Muhammad Ibrahim.

Prof Ibrahim was speaking at a news conference in Akora Khattak on Friday after returning from North Waziristan, where he and two other colleagues Maulana Yousaf Shah and Maulana Abdul Hai met members of the political council of the TTP.

The Golkar Party accounted for the highest number of campaign advertisements in the media from March 1-11, despite the official campaign period only beginning on Sunday, a watchdog said.

Idy Muzayyad, a member of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), the government’s media watchdog, said on Friday that his office, working with the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), had counted more than a thousand political ads on TV during the 11-day period.

GILGIT: Lawmakers of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) demanded on Friday that the appointment of the chief election commissioner (CEC) in G-B should be made in consultation with the leader of the house and opposition and that elections are held only after the five-year term is completed.

The demands were made through two separate resolutions tabled and passed with a majority in the session chaired by deputy speaker Jamil Ahmed.

The National Awakening Party (PKB) is ready to become a major party to help lead the country through a combination of its nationalistic and religious forces, head of the PKB's central leadership board, Marwan Jafar, said on Friday.

Marwan said that his party was prepared to play a role in national development.

“We are ready to help lead Indonesia because from a mass organization point of view it represents the Nahdlatul Ulama (the country's largest Muslim organization) and from a political point of view it embodies the PKB," Marwan said as quoted by Antara news agency.
