Bosnian Serb MPs Stage Protest Boycott

The opposition MPs staged a symbolic protest on Sunday by gathering all the assembly's microphones and handing them over to the speaker, Igor Radojicic, before they boycotted the day's session, media reported from Banja Luka.

They claimed that emergency procedures had been improperly used on Saturday to adopt the entity’s budget for 2014 urgently, in time to meet a Monday deadline imposed by the International Monetary Fund.

Lawmakers from the opposition Serb Democratic Party, the Party of Democratic Progress and the People's Democratic Movement took part in the boycott.

Barisan Nasional Opposition members staged a walkout from the state legislative assembly led by state Opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid over a series of repeated disruption during her speech in the assembly.

During the proceedings, the annoyed Jahara said before walking out, "I am sick and bored of the attitude of this assembly."

She said the walk out was necessary as it had became impossible for her to talk.

"I'm not given a fair chance to talk.

"My every sentence was met with objections.

Megawati meets with Jokowi, Ahok

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri has met with Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his deputy Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, a party official has said.

“Politics was not discussed,” PDI-P executive Trimedya Panjaitan said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday. The meeting came amid speculation that the PDI-P would nominate Jokowi as its presidential candidate in 2014.

The party has yet to announce its presidential candidate, while Jokowi has repeatedly said that he would focus on his current job as Jakarta governor.

Parliament committee to discuss ‘populist’ laws

The parliament’s financial and economic committee meets today to discuss ‘populist’ draft laws that include increases to social security, rent allowance and housing loans. Meanwhile, AlQabas daily quoted committee president Faisal AlShaya who revealed that Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Sheikh Salem Abdul-Aziz AlSabah, as well as Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Health Minister Sheikh Mohammad AlAbdullah Al-Sabah, are invited “to provide the government’s opinion” on the proposals.

LB Elections: Polling closes in Balochistan, counting undewrway

QUETTA: Polling for the local bodies (LB) elections for over 4,000 seats in 32 districts of Balochistan has ended and the counting of votes is underway.

 

Stringent security arrangements had been made, while the day was declared as a public holiday facilitating voters to cast their votes in large numbers.

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has chalked out a comprehensive security plan to ensure peaceful local government elections in the volatile province.

Local bodies’ elections, scheduled for Saturday Dec 7, appear to be a major challenge for the provincial government in Balochistan, led by nationalist Dr Abdul Malik Baloch.

The May 11 general elections witnessed violent attacks by separatist armed groups in the capital Quetta and other troubled parts of the province.

KARACHI / HYDERABAD / SUKKUR: Even after nearly six months since the May 11 elections, the fate of the complaints registered against rigging in polls has yet to be decided by the election tribunals in Karachi, Sukkur and Hyderabad. Around 93 complaints have been registered — 31 in Hyderabad, 33 in Sukkur and 29 in Karachi.

Legislative Election Voter List Delayed Until March

The release date for the final voters list for the 2014 legislative elections has been revised after meetings between government institutions and the elections board on Wednesday. The final list will now be released 14 days prior to polling day on April 9.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has pushed the deadline back after announcing in November that the list would be released on Dec. 4.

Jordan wins UN Security Council seat

NEW YORK –– The UN General Assembly on Friday endorsed Jordan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2014-15 term.

A total of 178 out of 193 members of the UN General Assembly voted in favour of Jordan.

Jordan needed a two-third majority to win the seat.

Ahead of the vote, participants stood for one minute to pay respect to South African iconic leader, Nelson Mandela, who passed away on Thursday. 

Poll body given ample time to fix voter roll

The Election Supervisory Committee (Bawaslu) has said it will be flexible with the deadline for the General Elections Commission (KPU) to fix citizen registration problems still affecting around 3 million voters in the final list of 186 million voters.

As of Tuesday, the KPU and the Home Ministry had produced citizen registration numbers for around 7.1 million of 10.4 million voters who had lacked them. The KPU is scheduled to hold a plenary meeting on Wednesday, the deadline previously set by Bawaslu.
