The House of Representatives is mulling an amendment to the 2008 Presidential Election Law that would limit the amount of campaign spending by candidates.

Anna Mu’awanah, a deputy chairwoman of the House Legislation Body, said on Wednesday that it was important to cap campaign spending so that candidates would focus more on their programs rather than on boosting their image.

“It should be limited so that the public can be better informed about their political choices,” she said.

Speaker Nabih Berri will throw his weight behind a fresh bid to form a Cabinet after the Constitutional Council’s failure to meet automatically put the extension of Parliament’s term into effect, political sources said.

Berri, who warned Wednesday against security threats facing Lebanon and urged stepped-up efforts to ward off sectarian violence, said he would resume follow-up on the government formation issue “in the next day or two,” lawmakers quoted him as saying.

ssues related to the draft Constitution and ways to reach compromise were discussed at a meeting held Tuesday between Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki and members of Ennahdha National Constituent Caucus in the National Constituent Assembly (NCA).

At the end of the meeting, President of Ennahdha bloc Sahbi Atig stressed the need to find a common ground on conflicting issues raised after the submission of the draft Constitution, the Presidency of the Republic said in a press release.

UN told that Libya’s transition will remain difficult and that Political Isolation Law violates civil rights.

Caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil blasts his ally Hezbollah for disloyalty toward the Free Patriotic Movement.

Bassil said in remarks published Tuesday that Hezbollah “stabbed both Tayyar [FPM] and democracy in the back” over the matter of challenges to the Constitutional Council.

The council, set to meet Tuesday, failed to convene twice last week after three of its members – two Shiites and a Druze – did not show up.

The FPM and President Michel Sleiman have each handed petitions to Council over the recent decision to extend Parliament’s term.

Hassan Rohani has won Iran's 11th presidential election following a vote that saw a massive popular turnout on June 14.

Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced on Saturday that of a total of 36,704,156 valid ballots counted, Rohani won 50.70 percent of the ballots with 18,613,329 votes.

Principlist candidate Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf came in behind Rohani by a wide margin, winning 6,077,292 votes. He conveyed his congratulations to Rohani on his victory.
