UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, the very man who oversaw and helped shape Yemen political transition of power by ushering out former President Ali Abdullah Saleh from the the presidency in 2011 said in a television interview that the former president could in all legality run in the next presidential elections in 2014.

"There is no text which requires former President Saleh to give up the leadership of the General People's Congress ...

“Our experts have found 25,874 records that are suspected of being duplications in the voters’ list for the elections,” Bledi Cuci, Socialist undersecretary for electoral affairs, said Thursday.

“Our latest extract has also found that 352,237 voters that are recorded in the list do not have an exact address,” he added.

According to Cuci, the most problematic regions where voters do not have an exact address is Tirana, followed by Vlora, Shkodra and Korca.  

Kuwait emir insult case: 68 face prosecution

Kuwait’s public prosecution is set to investigate a number of people for allegedly undermining the status of the country’s emir.

The 68 men and women have been referred to the prosecution by the state security agency amid suspicions that they helped disseminate a controversial speech given by opposition leader Musallam Al Barrak for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, local Arabic daily Al Jareeda reported on Thursday.

Egypt's opposition forms committee to discuss stance on elections

The National Salvation Front will form a committee within the coming days to discuss its stance on the upcoming parliamentary elections, Magdi Hamdan, a member of the front, said on Wednesday.

The front held a meeting earlier today to discuss whether it will contest or boycott the elections, Hamdan, a member of the Democratic Front Party, told Aswat Masriya.

The meeting was held at the Democratic Front Party headquarters.

The poll, which was carried out for the TV station by the Italian Piepoli Institute, said 49 per cent of repondents would vote for the Socialist-led coalition in the elections, well ahead of 40 per cent for the centre-right ruling Democratic Party coalition.

The New Democratic Spirit, a splinter group from the ruling Democrats, headed by former President Bamir Topi, would receive 5.5 per cent of the votes and another 5.5 per cent would go to the nationalist Red and Black Alliance.

Security groups press reformist candidates to drop out

Reformist candidates in the municipal elections are being threatened against running, an opposition website reports.

The Kaleme website writes that reformist candidates are being summoned by security bodies to be dissuaded from running in the elections.

“While numerous reformists, critics, and progressive former leaders of the country are participating in the city council elections and have officially registered their names, these days they are being contacted and told not to engage in elections activities,” Kaleme writes.

La liste des 108 candidats présélectionnés à l’Isie pour être auditonnés le vendredi 10 mai par la commission parlementaire de tri est enfin publiée.
Après plusieurs déclarations et communiqués rectificatifs de la part de la présidence de l’ANC, le site web de la Constituante a révélé, hier, les noms des 108 candidats dont seront retenus 36.
Les noms de ces derniers seront soumis au vote des constituants lors d’une séance plénière pour le choix définitif de 9 membres qui constitueront le conseil directoire de l’Instance supérieure indépendante des élections.

The registration of presidential candidates for the June election in Iran began today, Tuesday May 7, and will continue until Saturday.

Interior Minister Mostafa Najjar announced that the Guardian Council will decide on the eligibility of candidates during five days of deliberation that begin on May 12.

For the first time, the presidential election will take place at the same time as municipal elections.

Berri sets date for key session on elections law

Speaker Nabih Berri Wednesday scheduled four consecutive legislative sessions for next week to study a new electoral law with the Orthodox Gathering topping the legislature’s agenda.

Meanwhile, the Future Movement reiterated its opposition to the Orthodox proposal.

Lawmakers who visited Berri quoted the speaker as saying the consecutive sessions would begin on May 15 in order to discuss and approve a new electoral law.

Abu Dhabi: The Supreme Court’s state security court on Tuesday set May 13 and 14 as the next dates in the trial of a group of Emiratis charged with threatening national security.

At the end of a five-hour session on Tuesday, Presiding Judge Falah Al Hajiri said the court will hear the defence deliberations of the rest of the accused at the next hearing.

Many legislative candidates in next year’s election face disqualification because they are registered with more than one political party or in more than one electoral area, the national election body revealed on Tuesday.

“There are at least 24 people who are either registered under two parties … or in two electoral areas, with some even registered in three electoral areas,” said Husni Kamil Manik, chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU).
