Iran FIL Front completes candidates list to run for Council elections

Head of an Iranian principlist group, Asadollah Badamchian, says the group has finalized a list of 31 hopefuls to take part in the upcoming city and village council elections for the capital, Tehran.

Badamchian said Wednesday that the Followers of Imam and Leadership Front has wrapped up its list and is in talks with another principlist group, the Perseverance Front. 

On April 22, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said 302,165 hopefuls have registered for the fourth council elections.

Hopeful Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi said he and his allies in the Coalition of Five are to make up their minds about their pick in the coming days. 

The Coalition of Five brings together former interior minister, Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi; deputy speakers of Iran Majlis, Mohammad Reza Bahonar and Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard; head of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines, Yahya Al-e Es’haq; and former foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki.

The UAE is progressing steadily because of the unity and synergy among the Emirates’ rulers, said His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

In an interview with Sharjah TV, Dr Shaikh Sultan criticised those who would like to make a lot of noise about the UAE “just for the sake of talking”, without realising what has been achieved in this country since the federation.

BEIRUT: Maronite Bishop Bulos Matar informed Speaker Nabih Berri Friday of Bkirki's opposition to postponing the elections which would extend Parliament's term.

After talks with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh, Matar, delegated by Cardinal Beshara Rai, said: “Discussion centered on the necessity to hold elections on time because that is in the highest interest of the nation and it is impossible to do away with such an interest.”

La réunion de la majorité gouvernementale qui a eu lieu jeudi a été interrompue avant même que ne soit discuté l'ordre du jour. Une source présente lors de la réunion a déclaré à Lakome qu'Abdelilah Benkirane et Hamid Chabat se sont lancés dans une joute verbale lors de laquelle le chef du gouvernement a demandé au secrétaire général du parti de l'Istiqlal de retirer ses ministres du gouvernement.

Albania’s parliament on Monday approved an investigation into claims that opposition leader Edi Rama assaulted the Albanian ambassador to the OSCE, after a speech at the Political Academy in Vienna on April 24.

The committee backed by the ruling Democrats and their junior allies in parliament was approved by 71 votes in favour while opposition MPs boycotted the vote.

The parliamentary probe, the third against Edi Rama in one decade, will try to determine whether the opposition leader damaged Albania’s standing in the West through his behavior.

Six ministers to change in Egypt cabinet reshuffle-state paper

A limited cabinet reshuffle will see six ministers replaced in Egypt, state newspaper al-Ahram said on Thursday, citing government sources.

The new ministers, who could swear oath on Tuesday, are expected to be those of justice, legal and prosecution affairs, culture, agriculture, planning and international cooperation, and one of the economic portfolio ministries, al-Ahram said, without naming the candidates.

Freedom House, a non-profit organization, evaluates press freedom in various countries all over the world every year, rating each country from 1 to 7 for political rights (PR) and civil liberties (CL) with 1 as the ‘most free’ and 7 the ‘least free’.

Entekhab website reported today April 30 that former President Mohammad Khatami will not be running in the June presidential elections.

After weeks of speculations on whether the senior reformist figure would run in the elections and repeated endorsements by various progressive organizations, Entekhab website reports that Mohammad Khatami announced today that in view of the many restrictions laid against him by the government, he will not run in the elections.

Sleiman opposes March 8 demand for veto power

BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman voiced in remarks published Wednesday his opposition to March 8 demands for veto power in the new Cabinet to be formed by Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam.

Speaking to An-Nahar newspaper, Sleiman "rejected the demands for a blocking third but had reservations over the rotation of ministerial portfolios."

On Wednesday, the Beirut lawmaker briefed Sleiman on his recent consultations with the various political groups with regard to the Cabinet lineup.

New hearing in UAE trial over 'political plot'

The trial of 94 UAE Islamist dissidents accused of plotting to seize power in the Gulf state resumed on Tuesday, as rights groups urged Britain to pressure the visiting Emirati president on their behalf.

Only 86 defendants, including 13 women, were present at the top state security court in the United Arab Emirates, WAM state news agency reported. The rest are being tried in absentia.

The women defendants have been on bail since the trial began on March 4. The hearing was adjourned until Monday after the court panel heard defence testimony.

Municipal elections set for August 27

AMMAN — Municipal elections will be held on August 27, the government announced on Wednesday.

Interior Minister and Minister of Municipal Affairs Hussein Majali said preparations for the elections will kick off within the coming few days, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Cabinet decided to task the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) with supervising the municipal elections.
