Le Sénat a adopté, au cours d'une séance plénière tenue, dimanche à Nouakchott, sous la présidence de son vice-président, M. Seydna Ali Ould Mohamed Khouna, deux projets de loi dont le premier porte sur la répression des crimes de coup d'Etat et autres formes de changements anticonstitutionnels du pouvoir, en tant que crimes contre la sûreté de l'Etat et le second sur la répression des crimes d'esclavage et de la torture en tant que crimes contre l'humanité.

Manama: Saudi Arabia on Monday told Iran to stop interfering in internal Gulf Arab affairs and spreading “sedition”, activities Tehran denies.

The comments, made by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal, follow similar allegations levelled at Iran by the kingdom in the past, and other Gulf states are likely to voice similar complaints at a summit of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that opened on Monday.

International peace envoy tasked with ending Syria’s conflict has arrived in Syria and is set to meet with President Bashar al-Assad.

Lakhdar Brahimi is hoping to "achieve a breakthrough", to broker a solution that would lead to a consensus transitional government with full authority, diplomatic sources told Al Jazeera on Sunday.

Brahimi's trip is his third to Damascus since taking his post in August.

Egypt's vice president resigns amid polls

Egypt's vice president has announced his resignation on the day of a referendum on a new constitution, state TV reported.

Mahmoud Mekki's resignation on Saturday was announced just hours before the end of voting in the second and final round of a referendum on a disputed Muslim Brotherhood-backed constitution.

Mekki, a career judge, has said he intends to quit once the charter is adopted.

The new constitution eliminates the post of vice president.

The No to Military Trials Campaign accuses Egypt's presidency of "lying" regarding the status of the military trials of civilians, in response to a statement released by Egypt's presidential assistant on foreign relations, Essam Haddad.

While Haddad's statement claims that the new constitution marks Egypt's progress towards universal Human Rights standards, including prohibiting the trying of civilians in military courts, the rights campaign condemned such a statement as completely false.

Egypt’s political opposition boycotted a debate on the draft constitution on Friday, one day before the second phase of the national charter’s referendum. The session, however, was held as planned.

The debate, designed to give opposition the chance to voice their reservations over the draft constitution, was held at the headquarters of the upper house of parliament (Shura Council).

Draft law seeks to expel military members for political involvement

The draft of a law on the disciplinary rules of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) makes involvement by members of the military in political or ideologically motivated activities grounds for their expulsion from the military, the Yeni Şafak daily reported on Thursday.
 
According to the bill, which has been submitted to the Parliament Speaker's Office, military members who are involved in political or ideologically motivated activities will be expelled from the military.

Two new election tickets emerge ahead of official candidacy period

Two new political groups announced their nominees for the national ticket on Thursday, two days ahead of the start of the official period to file candidacy applications for the January 23 parliamentary polls.

The “Nation List”, which will be a nucleus of a new political party, announced on Thursday its 27 candidates on the national level, headed by former deputy Lower House speaker Atef Tarawneh.

The new group is expected to announce its full programme next week, according to Tarawneh.

Bosnia Urged To Put April Census on Hold

The external body monitoring Bosnia's 2013 census has advised the authorities to postpone the headcount planned for April on the grounds that the country is insufficiently prepared.

Andy McGuffie, of the EU delegation to Bosnia, told Balkan Insight on Wednesday that the International Monitoring Operation, IMO, which oversaw this year's test census, does not believe Bosnia and Herzegovina is ready.
