Le Conseil constitutionnel a annulé l’élection de 12 députés

Le Conseil constitutionnel a prononcé l’annulation de l’élection de 12 membres de la Chambre des représentants appartenant à 10 circonscriptions électorales, après avoir fini de statuer, durant le délai d’un an fixé constitutionnellement, sur les recours relatifs aux élections législatives du 25 novembre 2011.
Le Conseil a été saisi de 170 requêtes qui concernent 71 circonscriptions électorales locales et d’une requête concernant la circonscription électorale nationale, indique un communiqué du Conseil constitutionnel.

La loi portant ouverture du champ audiovisuel au secteur privé doit, de l'avis de plusieurs partis, contenir des garde-fous bien définis et transparents à même de faire obligation aux investisseurs d'offrir des prestations médiatiques objectives et impartiales et d'empêcher les détenteurs de fonds et les personnes influentes d'accaparer ce secteur à des fins personnelles.

Cependant, les avis des responsa-bles de ces partis oscillent entre opposants et partisans de l'idée de création de chaînes de télévision, qui seraient la propriété des partis politiques.

Mikati says to run in upcoming polls

Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced in a late Thursday night interview that he would run in the next parliamentary elections and stressed that the polls must take place on time.

"It is natural that I run for elections since I am involved in public affairs,” Mikati said in response to a question.

His comments were made during an interview with Al-Arabiya satellie channel Thursday evening.

Student protests in Sudan drag on

Sudan has been witnessing days of student protests after four students from Darfur were killed on December 5. Those students, from Gezira University, were demanding to be exempted from tuition fees - as stipulated in the July 2011 Darfur peace deal negotiated in Doha.

Darfuri students and activists say the government and "thugs" loyal to the ruling National Congress Party killed the four and threw their bodies in a canal.

Israel Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman resigns

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has resigned after prosecutors decided to charge him with breach of trust.

Mr Lieberman has also resigned as deputy prime minister, and said he would fight to clear his name of the charges.

The case against him relates to a financial scandal dating back more than a decade.

His resignation comes five weeks before Israel's general election.

Taliban to attend Paris conference

The Taliban on Tuesday announced they would participate in a conference on Afghanistan’s future to be hosted by France later this month.

A spokesman for the movement said two representatives of the Taliban would participate in the conference, scheduled for Dec. 17 in Paris.

Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement the gathering was similar to the Kyoto conference in Japan. The Taliban representatives would discuss the situation in Afghanistan and spell out their stance on the issue.

Update: Morsy issues official law staggering referendum vote

President Mohamed Morsy has issued a law officially dividing the referendum on the constitution into two stages, according to MENA.

Ten governorates will vote in the first stage on 15 December: Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan, Assiut, Daqahlia, Gharbiya, Sharqiya, Sohag, South Sinai and North Sinai. The second stage will be conducted 22 December in the governorates of Giza, Qena, Beheira, Beni Suef, Damietta, Ismailia, Kafr al-Sheikh, Matrouh, Monufiya, New Valley, Port Said, Qalyubiya, Red Sea, Suez and Luxor.

Syria opposition wins international backing

More than 100 countries have recognised a new Syrian opposition coalition, opening the way for greater assistance to the forces fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad, including possibly military aid.

Backing for the Syrian National Coalition, formed in Qatar in November, was given at an international conference of the "Friends of the Syrian People" in Morocco on Wednesday.

The opposition had been under intense international pressure to create a more organised and representative body to channel any aid extended by foreign countries.

Israel to keep Palestinian funds for months

Israel will withhold tax revenues from the Palestinian administration until at least March, in response to the Palestinians' bid for statehood at the UN, Israel's foreign minister says.

Under current peace deals, Israel collects about $100 million every month in duties on behalf of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the occupied West Bank. That money is primarily used to pay public sector salaries.
