Opposition leaders sans Shahbaz Sharif lead protest against ‘rigging’ in Islamabad

Opposition parties held a protest demonstration outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Islamabad on Wednesday against alleged rigging in the July 25 general elections. PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, however, was not in attendance.

The PML-N president could not fly to Islamabad from Lahore due to bad weather, said party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The decision to hold the protest was made by the newly formed 11-party grand opposition alliance, named ‘Pakistan Alliance for Free and Fair Elections’, at a multi-party conference held in Islamabad on Friday.

Pakistan’s general election has been plunged into chaos after the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) said it would reject the result amid widespread allegations that the military was rigging the ballot in favour of the party led by the former cricketer Imran Khan.

With only a third of the vote counted by 3am – an hour after the result was officially due – Khan’s Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led in 110 seats, with the PMLN trailing on 68.

The accountability court on Friday announced the verdict in the Avenfield properties corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), handing ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond known income and 1 year for not cooperating with NAB. The sentences will run concurrently which means the former prime minister will serve 10 years in jail.

Opposition Nation Alliance promises return to parliamentary system

In a joint statement released yesterday, the Nation Alliance promised to return to the parliamentary system if elected.

The parties in the Nation Alliance, namely the Republican People's Party (CHP), the Good Party (İP), the Felicity Party (SP) and the Democrat Party (DP), said that when and if they obtain a majority in Parliament, the political governing system is to be reconstructed in line with the principles of separation of powers and pluralistic democracy.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s top court upheld on Thursday a law mandating a nationwide recount of votes in a May parliamentary election but ruled that the cancellation of overseas, displaced, and Peshmerga ballots was unconstitutional.

Parliament, which had mandated the recount after a number of political parties alleged fraud, had canceled some results such as overseas and displaced votes by amending the election law this month.

Almost half of Turkish voters living abroad cast votes in Turkey’s June 24 presidential and parliamentary elections – a higher turnout than in previous polls, the nation's top election official said on Wednesday.

More than 1.48 million Turkish expats went to the polls between June 7 and 19, a turnout of 48.78 percent, Sadi Guven, head of the Supreme Election Council (YSK), told reporters in the capital Ankara, adding that the voting at foreign missions in 60 countries had occurred without incident.

AMMAN — The Jordanian National Commision for Women (JNCW) on Thursday commended the government for the inclusion of women in the new ministerial team headed by Prime Minister-designate Omar Razzaz, pointing out that “the new government has set a new record in the number of female ministers in the history of Jordan".

Razzaz's team, sworn in on Thursday, includes seven women in the 29-strong Cabinet.

AMMAN — Prime Minister Omar Razzaz and his Cabinet were sworn in on Thursday before His Majesty King Abdullah, who issued a Royal Decree ordering the formation of the Cabinet after the resignation of the government of Hani Mulki, the Royal Court said in a statement.

Besides Razzaz, the Cabinet consists of 28 ministers including 7 women for the first time in the history of the Kingdom.

It includes 11 first-time ministers and 17 who have served in previous governments.

The 32 ministers in the cabinet of Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly were sworn in before President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Thursday.

Last week, President El-Sisi appointed Housing Minister Madbouly as a new prime minister and tasked him with forming the new cabinet, following the resignation of the cabinet of former PM Sherif Ismail.
