Egypt: Activists to hold referendum on 'roadmap' coinciding with presidential elections

A number of Egyptian activists and movements announced they would hold a referendum on the army-backed roadmap and parallel elections coinciding with the upcoming presidential elections slated for May 26-27.

A former member of Tamarod movement Ghada Mohamed Naguib said that a number of "revolutionary forces" will hold a referendum on the so-called June 30 roadmap announced by Al-Sisi last July 3. She pointed out that "revolutionary movements" do not recognize the upcoming presidential elections, including April 6 Youth Movement, Revolutionary Socialists and others.

Les quatre partis s’impatientent et le font savoir. La majorité, en particulier le PJD (parti de la justice et du développement), ne pouvait pas rêver de plus belle occasion pour acculer l’opposition ou du moins une partie d’elle au mur.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced partial results on Sunday with presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah in the lead.

IEC Chief Mohammad Yousuf Nuristani announced that Abdullah is in the lead with 44.4 percent, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai trails with 33.2 percent and Zalmai Rassoul with 10.4 percent.

"Today's announcement is not final," Nuristani emphasized. "There will be changes in the results as counting continues."

The partial result consisted of 49.67 percent of votes from 34 provinces, adding up to roughly 3.5 million votes nationwide.

Somali parliament pushes for stricter monitoring of government spending

After a closed session on Sunday (April 20th) attended by the speaker of the Somali parliament, his two deputies, the 15 parliamentary committee chairs and ministry officials, lawmakers said they were still unsatisfied with Ministry of Finance's budgetary accounting.

The details about last year's expenditures remain "unclear" and other requested changes to this year's budget were not included, Defence Committee Chairman Hussein Arab Isse told Sabahi after the meeting.

Lawmakers gave the ministry another week to provide the necessary information, he said.

Country cannot afford dictatorship: Khursheed

LAHORE: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has said the country cannot afford a dictatorship and that the judiciary will not endorse any ‘misadventure’.

“The current situation in the country does not allow any dictatorship and the judiciary will also not endorse any misadventure,” Mr Shah said while talking to journalists at the airport here on Sunday.

Referring to strong reaction from the army on some speeches made recently in the parliament, the PPP leader said “minor mistakes” made by legislators should be tolerated and overlooked.

Sudan’s PCP denies Bashir’s acceptance of interim government

Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has denied statements attributed to its foreign relations secretary, Bashir Adam Rahma, claiming that president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir agreed to form a transitional government for two years.

In an interview with the Qatari Al-Watan newspaper on Sunday Rahma said that Bashir accepted the transitional government which will administrate the country during the national dialogue process.

El gobierno mauritano ha puesto fecha para las próximas elecciones presidenciales, que se celebrarán el 21 de junio en la primera vuelta y el 5 de julio siguiente para la segunda, en caso de que fuera necesaria, según un comunicado de la Presidencia emitido anoche.

La "declaración de candidatura" deberá solicitarse al Consejo Constitucional desde hoy y hasta el 7 de mayo a la medianoche, mientras que la campaña electoral se abrirá el 6 de junio y durará catorce días.

Syria conflict: West criticises Assad election plan

The US has dismissed a Syrian plan to hold a presidential election on 3 June as a "parody of democracy".

UN chief Ban Ki-moon also condemned the plan, saying it could torpedo efforts to broker a deal to end the three-year civil war, which has killed 150,000.

Government forces have made gains recently, but rebels still control vast territories. It is unlikely that voting would be held in those areas.

President Bashar al-Assad is expected to seek a third seven-year term.

Syria will hold presidential elections on June 3, the country's parliament speaker announced Monday, a vote Syrian President Bashar Assad is likely to contest as his nation sinks deeper into a bloody civil war, now in its fourth year.

Assad has been widely expected to seek another seven-year term in office despite the uprising against his rule. The conflict that has engulfed the nation since March 2011 has killed over 150,000 people and forced one-third of the country's population from their homes.

Le porte-parole d’Al Jomhouri, Issam Chebbi a indiqué lors d’une conférence de presse tenue ce lundi, 21 avril 2014 que les difficultés sécuritaires et économiques que connait le pays ne doivent pas servir de prétextes pour reporter les prochaines élections. Il a ajouté dans ce sens que son parti insiste sur la tenue du scrutin avant la fin de l’année en cours. 

Par ailleurs, Issam Chebbi a indiqué que son parti participera aux travaux de la session préliminaire du congrès national du dialogue économique. Il a également estimé que ce congrès intervient tardivement.

Car bomb in Mogadishu kills a Member of Parliament

According to our correspondent Abdiaziz Mohamed Ali Hajji, a car bomb blasted this morning in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district.

The bomb said to be an IED, was tied to the car of Members of Parliament and unexpectedly blasted as they were driving by Hamarweyne, a district only minutes away from the presidential palace.

The explosion instantly killed Isaak Mohamed Riino, a Member of Parliament whereby four others were seriously wounded.

C’est la première réunion depuis la présidentielle. Le secrétaire général du FLN Amar Saâdani a réuni ce lundi 21 avril son Bureau politique au siège du parti à Hydra. À l’ordre du jour : « examiner des questions liées à l’évolution sur la scène politique ».

Le FLN, qui a défendu la candidature du président Abdelaziz Bouteflika, souhaite préserver son rôle de « leadership afin de contribuer effectivement et positivement aux côtés du président Bouteflika dans les étapes qui suivent, notamment l’application de son programme », selon le communiqué sanctionnant cette réunion.

H.Khedher étonné de la décision de réintégration des anciens délégués du RCD dissous

Habib Khedher, député du mouvement Ennahdha à l'assemblée nationale constituante a exprimé son étonnement, lors de la plénière de ce lundi 21 avril 2014, quant à la décision du gouvernement de réintégrer les anciens délégués en relation avec le système corrompu et le RCD dissous. 

Il a appelé le gouvernement à réviser cette décision pour éviter les conflits dans les régions.
