Registration for city council elections ends

Registration for the city council elections across the country ended on Sunday, with thousands of hopefuls registering interest in contesting elections that will be held on the same day as the presidential election on June 14.

Registration began on April 15. 
 
According to the Constitution, city councils have a responsibility to “expedite social, economic, development, public health, cultural, and educational program and facilitate other affairs relating to public welfare with the cooperation of the people according to local needs.”
 
According to Tehran Governor General Morteza Tamaddon, 3,715 hopefuls registered for the city council elections in Tehran by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Registration ended at midnight.  
 
In addition to political figures, a number of famous athletes, actors, actresses, TV hosts, and singers are on the list of candidates. 
 
Some of the political figures who have stood as candidates are former chief executive officer of the Tehran Urban and Suburban Railway Company Mohsen Hashemi, Vice President Masoumeh Ebtakar, former culture and Islamic guidance minister Ahmad Masjed Jame’i, former MP Fatemeh Rakeii, former education minister Morteza Haji, former MP Elahe Rastgou, Tehran City Councilor Parvin Ahmadinejad, former transport minister Hamid Behbahani, former labor and social affairs minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami, and former minister of information and communications technology Reza Taqipour. 
 
Iran Weightlifting Federation president Hossein Rezazadeh, wrestlers Rassoul Khadem, Abbas Jadidi, Ali Reza Dabir, Hamid Sourian, judoka Arash Miresmaeili, and taekwondo legend Hadi Saei are a number of athletes who plan to contest the election.  
 
And film producer Habibollah Kasesaz, actors Amin Zendegani, Omid Zendegani, Danial Ebadi, actress Afsaneh Baygan, and singers Mohammad Reza Eivazi and Abdolhossein Mokhtabad are other hopefuls.
