Head of an Iranian principlist group, Asadollah Badamchian, says the group has finalized a list of 31 hopefuls to take part in the upcoming city and village council elections for the capital, Tehran.

Badamchian said Wednesday that the Followers of Imam and Leadership Front has wrapped up its list and is in talks with another principlist group, the Perseverance Front.

On April 22, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said 302,165 hopefuls have registered for the fourth council elections.

The council elections are scheduled to be held on June 14, concurrent with Iran’s 11th presidential election.

The candidates must be vetted by Iran’s Guardian Council for final qualification. After being vetted, the names of the qualified candidates will be announced on May 18.

The city and village Islamic councils are local establishments that are elected by public vote in all cities and villages across Iran. Council members in each city or village are elected for a four-year term.

The councils are tasked with helping the country’s social, economic, cultural and educational advancement by encouraging public cooperation.
