The Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) application to join the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, should be considered favourably, said DAP chairman Karpal Singh.

He said as far as possible there should be a two-party system in the country and that could be achieved by PSM joining the Pakatan Rakyat.

“For Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar to contest under the PKR ticket (in the recent general election) really showed that PSM regards PKR as its ally,” he told a press conference here today.

Karpal also said that he did not know and was surprised over a statement by PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution that PSM’s application had been rejected.

“I don’t think it was the stand of Pakatan. I don’t think so. I’m not aware on that one,” he said.

Yesterday, The Star Online reported that PSM’s application to join the opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat had been allegedly shot down by the component parties.

Saifuddin said the opposition pact had met before the general election to discuss PSM’s application and that the decision was negative.
