KUALA TERENGGANU, July 8 (Bernama) -- Besut Umno Youth has pledged to give their full support to whoever fielded by Barisan Nasional (BN) as its candidate for the Kuala Besut state by-election scheduled for July 24.

Its chief, Mohd Mahdi Musa, said whoever named as BN's candidate by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tomorrow, must be the best candidate to have been entrusted to ensure victory for the coalition in the by-election.

"We will accept the candidate as the best choice made by the BN leadership and we will give our full support and cooperation," he said when contacted by Bernama here Monday.

Mohd Mahdi, who is also Kota Putera assemblyman, said Besut Umno by-election machinery had been fully mobilised and the fact that the by-election would be held during the fasting month of Ramadan would not dampen the spirit of Besut Umno Youth members to win the hearts of the voters.

"The campaigning methods might be different, but the objective is still the same. We will reach out to the voters day and night through various suitable programmes and events, including the organising of breaking of fast and Tarawih prayers and 'moreh'. Ramadan is not a restriction for our election machinery," he said.

The Election Commission (EC) has set July 12 for nomination and July 24 as the polling day for the Kuala Besut state by-election.

The constituency has 17,683 registered voters.

The state seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Dr A Rahman Mokhtar on June 26.

In the 13th general election, Dr A Rahman won the seat after defeating PAS candidate Napisah Ismail with 2,434-vote majority, hence allowing BN to retain power in Terengganu with simple majority after winning 17 from the 32 state seats.
