AMMAN — Lower House Speaker Saad Hayel Srour on Tuesday said he will include a request to withdraw confidence in the government on the agenda of Wednesday's session.

He made the remark at the beginning of a Lower House session on Tuesday where MPs continued their deliberations over the temporary social security law.

On Sunday, over 60 deputies submitted a memorandum to reconsider the Chamber's confidence in the government. By including it on the House's agenda, the request will be put to the vote under the Dome.

The MPs who signed the memo said it was prompted by the government's failure to "manage the country's affairs".

In the memo, the signatories said they submitted the request to the Lower House's Permanent Office after the government failed to meet its obligations, particularly its inability to avoid further increases in prices of basic commodities and services, citing decisions to raise electricity rates and increase taxes on mobiles.

This is the first time that a request to withdraw confidence reaches this stage, as a previous attempt was unsuccessful after dozens of the participating deputies withdrew their signatures.

In May, MPs had collected more than 80 signatures from their colleagues to reconsider confidence in the government.
