AMMAN — Deputies on Sunday could not discuss more than three articles out of 164 of the Lower House Rules of Procedure, increasing fears that they will not be able to conclude discussions over the regulations before the end of the week.

Only two meetings are left before the current non-ordinary Parliament session concludes, making it unlikely that MPs will be able to endorse the amended rules this week, parliamentary sources said following their meeting on Sunday.

Head of the Legal Committee Mustafa Yaghi (Balqa, 4th District) said deputies have so far only endorsed six articles of the regulations, noting that the remaining time before the Eid holiday and before the end of the current session would not be enough to conclude discussions of the rules.

The Lower House is scheduled to meet on Monday and Tuesday, with an agenda focusing only on deliberations over the Rules of Procedure.

As the session was set to discuss the Lower House’s internal regulations, Cabinet members did not attend the meeting.

Deputies are expected to speed up their discussions over these regulations to at least endorse a substantial number of its articles, and wait for a likely extraordinary session to complete it, prior to the ordinary session, scheduled to begin in October.

Meanwhile, the deputies referred the draft law on independent public institutions to its Administrative Committee to provide recommendations over a Senate decision to reject some amendments made by the Lower House to the bill.

Under their amendments, deputies cancelled several independent institutions in an effort to reduce public expenditures.
