Republican People's Party (CHP) spokesperson Haluk Koç has accused Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdoğan of acting as if he believes in democracy, although in reality he does not.

Koç, during a press conference he held on Wednesday, criticized Erdoğan's policy regarding Egypt. Showing a photograph of Erdoğan and President Abdullah Gül taken together with Saudi Arabian King Abdullah, Koç said: “They went to visit him personally; they almost walked hand in hand. What happened now? Why aren't you friends anymore?” He said Erdoğan was also friendly at one point with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt. “What happened to those best friends Mr. Prime Minister?” Koç asked. Erdoğan and his government have been vocal against the coup d'état in Egypt and also outspokenly supportive of the ousted president, Mohammed Morsi, formerly a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The CHP spokesman also said Erdoğan's plan to visit Gaza, which met with the objection of Israel and Egypt, fell through. “You have a horrible relationship with Israel, and relations with Egypt are out in the open. Are they going to parachute you into Gaza?” he asked, addressing Erdoğan.

He accused the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) of collaborating with imperialists, but said the party's “expiration date” was nearing. “You also feel that they will pull the plug on you. This is how history is. They first market you and after they use you, they flush you down the drain.”

Koç also referred to a statement from Erdoğan where the prime minister refuted the claims that he is a “dictator,” saying he would have people making the claim hanged if he really was such a despot. “Just look at your government's implementations, actions. You are a wannabe dictator, completely, with everything you have in your head, your discourse and your actions. This word is exactly the right word for you.” He also said Erdoğan's speeches have the air of “a dictator orating standing on top of a desk.”

The CHP official also said Erdoğan could never be a democrat, and accused him of engaging in taqiyya, a concept meaning that a Muslim is allowed to hide the fact that they are a Muslim when facing persecution. Later, he read a poem by Turkish bard Yunus Emre on the transience of kings and stately power.
