AMMAN — Minister of Municipal Affairs Walid Masri announced the final results of the municipal elections for 98 municipalities across the country on Wednesday, with the exception of three in Karak.

Tuesday’s results from some areas of Karak Governorate will not be considered after two ballot boxes were stolen and several others damaged in the Faqou election centre, which lies in Karak’s Abdullah Bin Rawaha Municipality, Masri said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Masri noted that in the Abdullah Bin Rawaha, Mutah and Mazar municipalities, in the southwestern governorate, results were suspended.

He added that authorities launched a full investigation into the incident, noting that minor technical flaws reported elsewhere across the Kingdom on the election day had no significant impact on the overall election process.

During the press conference, Masri announced that the elected mayors representing the largest municipalities in Jordan include Hussein Salem Fayad Bani Hani, who won the seat for Irbid Greater Municipality after receiving 11,726 votes, and Imad Momani, who won the Zarqa seat after garnering 11,253 votes.

Other successful mayoral candidates include Nabil Abdul Kareem Al Qudah for the Greater Ajloun Municipality, Khaled Hussein Al Khashman for the Greater Salt Municipality, Ali Suleiman Ali Qawaqzeh for Jerash Municipality and Majed Fawaz Odeh Al Sharari Al Khattab for Maan Municipality.

On Tuesday, the government said the municipal elections had been successful and conducted freely and fairly, despite the low voter turnout.

According to official figures, some 880,000 out of the 2.357 million Jordanians registered for the polls cast their ballots on Tuesday, making the turnout around 37.3 per cent.

A noticeable low participation rate was recorded in Amman, where only 10.5 per cent of eligible voters participated in the polls.
