Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir wants all state Umno wings to choose leaders who are “strong” enough to defend the Barisan Nasional Government’s policies.
He urged delegates from the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings to also choose leaders who can face the challenges coming from the Opposition and help to ensure Barisan wins the next general election.
“We must have leaders who are able to hold their own when debating with the Opposition and defend the Government’s policies,” he said after introducing Umno candidates in Alor Setar yesterday.
He said the voting process for the wings would be a test before the Umno election on Oct 19.
“I hope everything will run smoothly and if there is a problem during the process, I hope we will be able to solve it before the election.”
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has also urged delegates to choose the candidates who could help take the party to greater heights and who would always be there for the members.
He said the delegates should also think about Umno’s future by choosing the right candidates.
“I hope at this stage, all delegates have gone through the campaign process and able to judge for themselves the credibility of the contesting candidates,” he said.
The elections for the Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings will be held simultaneously today while the election for Umno supreme council posts will be held on Oct 19. The last time Umno held its polls was in 2009.
