The success of Barisan Nasional’s approach to politics in Malaysia’s plural society is rooted in its principle of moderation, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the approach worked because the Barisan government listened to the people and tried to meet their rising expectations.
“We have liberalised our political system, getting rid of laws which allow detention without trial and we now allow university students to be involved in politics,” said Khairy at the Umno International Forum held ahead of the party’s general assembly on Tuesday.
Khairy said if the Government had chosen to rule by might alone, it would drive the Malaysian people to react in an extreme manner and this would destabilise the country.
By addressing the concerns of the citizens, working to end poverty and meeting their needs on housing and education, the Government allowed moderation to shine in Malaysia,” he said.
In an unrelated development, Puteri Umno has launched a new fund called the Tabung Prihatin Puteri to help those in need.
It has, to date, collected RM117,000 for the fund, said its chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
Speaking to reporters after chairing at the Putra World Trade Centre, where the Umno general assembly will be held, she said RM50,000 had been allocated to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
She said another RM50,000 would be channelled to flood victims nationwide and the remainder would be held in reserve in the event of any disasters.
She said the funds for Typhoon Haiyan would be handed either to the Philippines ambassador or to a third party with an existing fund while the funds for flood victims would be handed to the state Puteri chiefs.
