Iran's Student Day was marked in Tehran by students chanting slogans in support of the release of political prisoners.

IRNA reports that the amphitheatre of Shahid Beheshti University was packed with students from the early hours of Saturday December 7. IRNA reports that students carried banners saying “Long live Rohani! Long live Khatami!” as well as “Political prisoners must be released!” Independent student news agencies have reported that during President Rohani’s speech, some students began chanting “Political prisoners must be released!” as well as “Mousavi and Karroubi must be released!”

The potential release of opposition leaders Mousavi and Karroubi, who have been under house arrest since 2011, has been heavily opposed by conservative factions of the Islamic Republic despite apparent efforts by the new administration to end their house arrest.

The ceremony at Sahid Beheshti University was attended by Science Minister Reza Farajidana, Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh, the head of the President’s Office and the representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei at the university.
