Two major Sabah Barisan Nasional components are voicing reservations over a proposed fundamental shift in the decision making process of the ruling coalition.

The United Pasok Momogun Kadazanmurut Organisation (Upko) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) said Barisan's proposed switch from consensus to a simple majority in decision making should be made after thorough deliberations by the coalition's supreme council.

PBS secretary general Datuk Johnny Mositun said such an important shift should require an input from all senior component party chiefs.

"We have to remember that Barisan is known to be firm in any decision it makes because it was achieved with the consensus of all member parties. Our members and supporters know this," he said on Tuesday.

Upko secretary general Datuk Donald Mojuntin said the consensus approach had enabled all Barisan component members to have an equal say in the coalition's decision-making process.

"If this changes, it could give rise to an inferiority complex especially among the smaller components. It may result in components being divided when important decisions have to be made," he said.

"Why change something that works? Why change something that is clearly the basis for Barisan's strength and success as well something that has given meaning to the Barisan concept," Donald added.

Barisan secretary Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had proposed that Barisan adopt a simple majority approach in making any decision.

He said the proposal would be submitted to the Barisan supreme council next year and if accepted it would require an amendment to the coalition's constitution.
