President Abdullah Gül, attending the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Adana Commodity Exchange on Thursday, said the debate surrounding the upcoming presidential elections is normal and that the important thing is to follow the correct procedures.

“No risk or lack of foresight should come out of this process,” Gül pointed out in an address to the business community during his half-day visit to Adana. Gül reminded his audience of the problems Turkey had encountered in previous presidential elections.

Gül is expected to discuss possible election scenarios with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Thursday evening. The meeting had not taken place before Today's Zaman went to print.

Gül also underlined that Turkey should undertake reforms to prioritize the rule of law and provide greater transparency, in addition to the significant reforms it has already realized in the past decade.

Touching upon the importance of stability and trust in the system, Gül said businessmen decide to invest by looking at the future. According to Gül, in order to bring foreign investment to all parts of Turkey, the country should be kept safe and stable. “Keep in mind that Turkey's savings by themselves will not lead to sufficient growth,” Gül stated, adding that external finance should also be brought to Turkey. “In order to succeed in this, we need to show everyone that democracy works properly in Turkey,” he noted.

According to Gül, 10 years ago a mere 1 billion was invested in Turkey due to a lack of trust in the system. Now, however, because trust in Turkey's system has increased, over 10 billion dollars in investment has come to Turkey. For Gül, the prime example of institutions' proper functioning will be the elections.

Gül said it is notable that Adana hosts 12 of the 500 largest companies in Turkey.
