- Observations: The RND was founded in 1997 at the height of then-President Zeroual's restoration of the state's 'democratic institutions', folllowing their dissolution during the crisis of the early 90's. Created by Zeroual supporters to fill the role of loyal party of government previously occupied by the FLN (at that time independent and pro-dialogue with the FIS), the RND won a (suspicious) landslide victory in the legislative elections of that same year. The party has been part of government ever since. Even though it has had a smaller presence in parliament than the FLN (which returned to the fold in the interim), its long-serving leader Ahmed Ouyahia was prime minister for the greater part of the 2000's. He stood down as party leader in January 2013.
